This is starting to get annoying
Not sure how many people put there have ever tried to find out what exactly there local laws were concerning to exotic animals. But I have been on the phone for two weeks now trying to find out mine. And noone has a clue! I have found out threw the department of natural resources and the fish and game headquarters in atlanta that the state of south carolina does not govern big cats and as long as I was not importing one into the state from overseas it is perfectly legal to get one shipped in from another breeder in another state. But I still need to find out my local regulations concerning big cats. I need to find my city and county. Ive called everyone I could possibly think of and im still waiting to hear back from the clerk of county council and im hoping she can be of some help. I spoke to a man at the department of agriculture and he said he was almost 100 percent positive that there were no regulations where I live because im in laurens county and gray court city and im far from the city limits out in the country. But I still need something on paper to cover my butt. But I will tell you its a big headache trying to find someone that knows anything. I was redirected at the department of natural resources 5 times before they told me cats were legal in south carolina. But yet they didnt know anything about county regulations. I was also referred to usda but they get very ill if you speak to the wrong department so if you ever have to call them make sure your calling the right department. This whole thing has made me think about the new laws trying to be passed and I cant but wonder if anyone would know about them? Well Im off to call the clerk of county again so wish me luck!

Re: This is starting to get annoying
African servals are my very favorite wild cat--I'm so jealous. A lot of them end up in sanctuaries because even though they are small and look cuddly, they can be a handful and very aggressive I'm told. They make very poor house pets. I hope you don't plan to keep it inside.
Although this sanctuary is here in Colorado, they may be able to help you with information, as they rescue wild cats from all over the country/world.

Re: This is starting to get annoying
Please keep us posted, and if you get the cats, we will need pics desperately. Okay well I will need them anyway.
If you can't get a permit for a serval, I recommend the F1/F2 generation of savannahs. They are domestic housecats bred from African servals and they look exactly like them. Here is a savannah:

Re: This is starting to get annoying
I doubt that either of those animals would make good pets. Sure, they are incredible and beautiful, but in my opinion they should be admired from afar.
Of course you'll do whatever you want to, I'm not trying to attack you. It just makes me sad that so many people just want an animal because it looks cool. My dad had a friend with a lynx, and the animal was incredibly intellegent and the guy took excellent care of the cat. But the lynx was extremely protective of this guy and was aggressive toward anyone that got close and though it didn't mean to, the guy was scratched and bitten by the lynx. These types of wild animals should remain wild, and not in the keeping of humans, again this is my opinion.
If and when you do get these animals I hope it goes well for you, and I'm sure you've done all the preparations and have the proper requirements, so good luck.

Re: This is starting to get annoying
I have to disagree I think cats make wonderful pets to people that are ready for such a challenge. True they are not pets for everyone but neither are large constritors or monitors or even dogs. I assure I dont think lynx or servals look "cool" I think they are amazing gorgeous creatures. Im sorry your your dads friend was scratched and bitten by his pet lynx but thats comes with keeping exotic pets whether reptile, bird, cats, dogs your more then likely going to get bitten or scratched. Thanks for the input though.
Stargazer If everything goes right i will be sure to get pics. Im still waiting to here from the clerk of my county to find out if there are any ordinaces for exotic cats in my county. If not the serval should be here in april and the lynx in either may or june. I doubt very seriously that either will be a permanent inside cat. More then likely I will house them inside until they hit sexual maturity then they will probably be kept outside. It all depends on how much they enjoy to spray lol. I have looked at the savannahs and to tell you the truth at first I didnt care for the serval I have always wanted a lynx but the wife loves the servals and last year we met some servals and thats all it took for me to fall in love with them.

Re: This is starting to get annoying
I got to see some servals at the Wild Animal Sanctuary this summer, and I nearly died from the cuteness. I am very jealous of you. Have you seen a caracal? Those are also off the cuteness scale.

Wow, hope I didn't activate your C.A.S. (Cat Acquisition Syndrome). Certainly looks like Sakara's has been activated. And mine too. I am dying to cuddle a serval. Are you anywhere near Denver? Never mind. I see you are on the east coast.

And seriously, don't you think that savannah looks just like a serval? You wouldn't want one of those?
