What all types of mammals do you need USDA approval of? Where else might I look for Indiana state or federal restrictions?

CITES mayh have some listings or links, and do searches for your state laws to find out the specifics.

To get a licensing package, call your local office of the USDA, they're in the phone book. Or visit their webpage for the rules, guidelines, and they have a section on their main page for office locations.
What you need a USDA license for depends entirely on what you're doing with them, how much money you're making, and a few other things.

On the subject, these guys are anal. be sure you thoroughly inspect your house many times before they come out. They are very very very anal. I had a friend who used to breed hedgehogs and they had about 100 at any given time. They lost their license becasue they kept a brand new trashcan that they kept their substrate in. They accidently left the lid off and they got their license revoked. So just be very careful man.

INDIANA!!! What a coincidence. I just got a complete package from them. Just call the DNR out there and ask for information and forms for exotic and dangerous animals. They even took the time to highlight the pertinant information for venomous for me. By far, the best permit system I have seen. Beats the heck out of FL.

I have a friend who breeds big cats and he has to have a USDI permit as well. You may want to check into that also. Of course it always helps if your a member of the SSP (species survival program). What are you wanting to get into?

Don't know if this pertains to you but the VADGIF in response to monkeypox has recently added *all* rodent species native to Africa as undesirable nonnative (exotic) animals. See the following for more information:
