Squirrel!!
So I have a few pics of my squirrel I had when I lived in Fla... I got him at UF... My roomie at the time called me and said he was on break and there was a baby squirrel laying on the ground trying to crawl around... I jumped out of bed and got over there as quick as I could... I found him on the ground and picked him up with a towel... He was fine, but all alone... He was pretty much a "fuzzy" at the time... His eyes were open but barely, and his ears were still sorta closed... I couldn't leave him there... So I took him and went to PetSmart. *GAH* Lucky for me though, there was a guy there picking up something who had taken in alot of baby squirrels. He told me what formula to get and all that jazz and told me how to raise him... So I got the formula and lil squirty syringe and took my baby squirrel home...
This was right after I got him home...
I took care of him and he grew pretty freakin' fast, lol... Before I knew it he was walkin all over the apartment and riding on my shoulder wherever I went... He was awesome! I tell u he was smart as a button!! He also knew if he liked u or not.... LOL... If he didn't like someone, he wouldn't bite them, but he would go over to them, check them out and then pee on them and run as fast as he could back over to mama He was pretty much potty trained, LOL... he would perch on the trash can and poo... It was kinda funny... I could take him outside and he'd come back to me... Kinda like a kid sometimes though... I'd tell him to come back and he would stare at me... Then I'd act like I was gonna walk away and he'd come jump on my shoulder... hehe... I would play with him kinda like a cat... he'd attack my hand and I'd shake attack him back... He'd run away, chatter and come back and attack my hand again, haha... He never bit me, only in play... He was cool, I miss him He now lives outside my old apartment in Gainesville and my ex roomies still feed him He just doesn't like them very much and wont come inside for them Anyways... Now that I'd shared my squirrel store, here's some pics
Riding in the car...

He LOVED his pillows... LOL

sleepy lil booger... so cute!
hehe...
HIS chair...

Re: Squirrel!!
oh yes... he was awesome! He was pretty well "trained" for a wild squirrel too, haha... He knew his name, "Eddie" and if he was being bad, I'd yell at him and he'd come running up my leg and nibble my ear as to say, "sowwie mommy!" LOL! He didn't have a cage >.< but also was only up when we were... hahaha... He would sleep all night under one of my pillows... Terrible, I know... At my one apt in Fla, we had a screened in porch and I set up a lil tree and climbing stuff for him and he LOVED it... When he was really bad or was caught chewing something that he wasn't suppose to, he'd go out there... He'd get mad, tear up his tree a bit and then sit and the door and squeak... Squirrels are VERY smart and owning him for a year deff. made me realize that, hahaha... He was prolly one of the coolest pets I have ever had though I would love to have another one

Re: Squirrel!!
well one day he decided to venture outside and liked it... he was gone for a few days then came back and stayed... he didn't really like one of my roomies there and when I left for the army he ended up jumping off the balcony away from my one roomie and into a tree... he wouldn't come to him and he stayed outside... My other roomie, who he really liked would go out and feed him, but he refused to come back inside for them... They still feed him to today, but he wont come back inside for them Maybe he misses his mommy
Good thing though, the apt complex we lived in is away from roads and has a HUGE vegetation area behind it away from cars and stuff... He apparently has been staying there for the entire time, lol... I'm sure he's got lots of babies and girlfriends by now too

Re: Squirrel!!
So are you going to do a road trip and see if you can find him?
Would love to see updated pictures if he is still around.

Re: Squirrel!!
I can't really take road trips right now, haha... I'm not SUPPOSE to travel outside 250 mile radius from killeen, haha... and to go to Fla, I'd have to take leave... If I ever get back down there I'll look for him... Kinda sux, cause I wish I could have them ship him to me Next time I talk to my ex roomie I'll have to ask him... haha

Re: Squirrel!!
This is a wonderful story of love and release. And Squirrel (I guess that's his name, right???) is too adorable for words. Good for you
There is something very special and unique in people who relate like this to animals, if I do say so myself. It sets them way apart from ordinary people. We are drawn to animals by something that we perhaps do not yet fully understand, but by golly, it's fun and rewarding!

Re: Squirrel!!
haha, tnx... I loved taking care of this lil guy... He always made me laugh, and I'm just happy that I got him and raised him up to be a healthy lil squirrel instead of someone else finding him and doing who knows what... It was deff. a great experience raising him and I would deff. do it again

Re: Squirrel!!
I definitely relate better to animals than humans, as a whole.
I certainly get a lot of pleasure from being here on this site with all you guys, even though I have long suspected that some of you may be human beings .

Re: Squirrel!!
Squirrels are pretty neat little critters. I've rescued a few as well. This one was my 4th rescue, Peanut. As a baby, we had him in a 3x3x4 ourdoor cage, when he was full grown size we would leave one of the little doors open for him to go out and explore during the day, but a few click click click noises and he would return, and always slept in his cage at night (we would shut the cage door to keep him safe at night). Once he reached sexual maturity he came back less and less often, until he was fully "free" again. We never planned on keeping any of our rescues. We kept them safe until adult hood, with minimal interaction in the interim. Of course they were handled occasionally for pictures, etc etc, but we didn't try to domesticate them. Here is a picture of Peanut and I when he was still fairly small.

Edit: here's a video of when he ran up my leg one time. That's my mom taping it...

Re: Squirrel!!
So I hate to be a buzzkill but I have to interject a word of advice...
Wildlife rehabbers do amazing things and I salute you.
To anyone who finds an animal in need, make absolutely certain you know your state and local laws. Keeping a wild animal without a wildlife rehabilitation permit is very against the law in many states. If you are caught, you will have to answer to a state DNR, F&W, or Game Warden officer (whichever they are called in your area). These are the single most powerful officers with jurisdiction in your area. They are allowed to search and seize without a warrant.
Just keep that in mind.
