Re: pet fox!!
I hear that if you want a fox, fennecs are the way to go. You can actually have them in the house. As for anything else...not sure. I'd love to have a red fox, I think they're gorgeous...but not too great as pets.

I think it depends on where you live for the permits. As far as price goes, from what I have seen, anywhere from $1200 to $1500. And probably up from there.

Re: pet fox!!
yeah i get that, cost and such. where i am we have 35 acres, so i could easily dedicate a few to a fox. when i say "pet" i mean i raise it and it knows me and i can pet it and things. i dont want to bring it inside and make it sleep in a dog bed....theyre so cute!

Re: pet fox!!
I dunno if you could keep a fox as an outside "pet" though. Seems like they would just run off and never be seen again. Even with the pet fennecs you have to be careful to always have them on a leash when they're outside or you run the chance of never seeing them again.

Re: pet fox!!
I've had a fox before - I raised two of them from kits but one got taken by a hawk while we were outside. >.<
Depends on the kind of fox. Honestly, they don't make great pets. They dig, they're loud, and they're solitary. Like cats, but loud and diggy. They don't usually like to be petted or anything, either. Go on to youtube, and do a search for "fennec fox" they're MUCH cuter and a bunch smaller, so their obnoxiousness can be more easily overlooked.
Foxes are prone to random, sudden, mood swings. "I love you I love you I love how your blood tastes!"
More easily forgiveable in fennec's.
Keeping regular foxes contained is difficult as well. They can dig out of almost anything, and are not above climbing things, either.
Too much work and annoying tendencies for how little "cute" they possess, imo. The cute fails to outweigh their flaws.

Re: pet fox!!
Also Justine, look into what you need for a permit to get one. Call your local fish and game. If you have that many acres, why not tell them you have interest in possibly running a native fox rehab?
If you think you can, segregate a section of your land into half-acre lots. Build little den-spots with logs, bury chickenwire five 6" deep, and 5' inside the enclosure, 1' outside so they can't dig out.... Or even cement it. Like garage floor cement, run the fence all the way into it so that it's secured inside the cement before it dries, fill the area with a few feet of earth, plant bushes, transplant small trees in there, drag in rotting logs.... Of course add a top as well so they couldn't climb out(they're ingenuitive little boogers)
It would be like making the perfect snake habitat, but far bigger. Also, if you make at least four of them, with the willingness to build more... If there is a need for such a thing in your area, not only could you effortlessly get the permit, but all your expenditures on it -could- be tax deductible, and you could also get funded by the state.
Of course, you would have to do rehab-and-release; but you would be doing a GREAT thing for the animals you obviously love.
Just something to look into.

Re: pet fox!!
The fox setup sounds like the same kind of habitat a mongoose would like. We have mongoose here in Jamaica.
Good luck if you decide to get the fox. It sounds challenging.
Xeike, you sure have had a lot of experience with all sorts of critters! Very useful.

Re: pet fox!!
Yeah, when you grew up how I did, you have to be passionate and completely absorbed about -something- or you end up like my mother. And that is one person I didn't want to be anywhere -near-, let alone be like.
And, me and animals always had a connection. I spent most of my time as a kid out in the woods apparently trying to get myself killed. (*gasp!* A hawk's nest! That is so cool, I'm going to go get a closer look, maybe the eggs have hatched...! *climbs the tree* or There's an alligator in our pool! *jumps in to retrieve it* Gramma is gonna be SO scared when I show her THIS!! or Wow, a stag! Holy cow he's a fifteen point buck! I'm going to follow him and see where he goes...)
>.>
Of course in my adventures I've had a few near-misses, a few disasters, but more often than not it involved: A.) a stupid human B.) A careless human C.) A heartless human and D.) some poor animal.
I'm just glad I have the courage when it matters to do what needs to be done for the critters' sake. And the booksmarts to back it up. lol

That's awesome Justine!
Really really research what you're getting into with foxes. They are a LOT of trouble. I really like foxes, I want a black fox one of these days, or maybe even a dapple. But, I'm just not ready for all that kind of hassle right now. And considering I'm renting a duplex, I hardly have the space.
What state do you live in by the way? I might be able to look into some stuff for you, too.

Re: pet fox!!
Also! I didn't think of this until just now, but...
If you have a fox, and you also have neighbors with any kind of smaller livestock (chickens, ducks, sheep, pigs, etc) you could very well get blamed for any deaths that occur.
They might not think twice about saying "I saw your fox in here killing my animals!" just because they don't like the idea that the fox might get out and do some damage to their stock. People who raise livestock can be very close-minded about what local fauna makes tolerable neighbors. Foxes aren't usually one of them. So - know your neighbors and Be. Careful.

Re: pet fox!!
ugh. there was an incident accross the creek from us (which is the back property line. it kinda goes road, our property where we live, swamp, creek/property line, road/neighbors. but anyhow, back there, the neighbors ( i guess they are) have a bee hive. local bears + beehive = shotgun. they shot a baby bear and left it in a ditch to die. i cant use the language to describe how i feel about that stupid stupid **censored** beehive being more important than a baby bear.
