I'm sure you all know Johnson&Johnson's baby shampoo. Well, I went and picked up "Tearless Ferret Shampoo" the other day for the girlfriend's new weasel. anyhow, we get to bathing this smelly little demon, and lo-and-behold I paid $2.49 for a 100ml bottle of baby shampoo. The idea is to not leave urine around so they can roll in it. I've kept ferrets for more than a decade now and haven't had a smell problem that wasn't easily fixed with a bath and dumping of the litter box. People who swear up and down ferrets reek need to keep their noses out of ferret asses.
Btw... what were you smoking when you decided to pay 2.49 for a 59 cent bottle of baby shampoo?

Thanks for being so blunt Rav. I have never owned a ferret and for all I knew $2.49 was reasonable.

hm....i have always heard that its the "musky oils" that ferrets discrete, that makes them so smelly...i didn't mean "urine" or "poopy" smell...i'm talking about the "heady" smell.....that tends to get worse with repeated bathing...(makes the oilglands work overtime)
Ravnos, if you have great ideas on cutting back that musky smell, somehow, please share.... I have always wanted gerbils, but even with scent glands removed...they still smell, and quite a bit more then a cat or dog would.....its that oil they descrete.
I researched the net high and low about that, and have only figured out that you can't really do nothing about that, and that bathing is supposed to make it worse?....of course a clean cage would mean at least no "poopy or urine" smells...

There is no way around it, they are always going to have a smell. I personally find the regular smell of dog much more vile than ferret. Anyway, regular bathing (I do mine every two weeks or so), and keeping their sleeping area as clean as possible will help immensely. Of course, this could mean scooping litter twice a day or more. When cleaning their cage, make sure you actually clean it - don't just scoop it out and put in new litter. The smell will be still around.
Stick to good old baby shampoos from the pharmacy or Walmart. Specialty ferret shampoos are the exact same thing, just with a different perfumes and dyes in them. They all work just the same, unless you really prefer the scent of one to another. I found this stuff that smells just like wild strawberries that I love.
And the word you're looking for is 'excrete' not 'discrete'.
Now gerbils on the other hand, don't smell any more than any other rodent if their cage is cleaned regularily. They certainly smell better than, say, mice which #$%^$%^$%^$%^& everywhere.

thank you for the correction...
I've only been in the states (i'm german) for 6 1/2 years, and my english is still lacking..
I actually have gerbils now (no, don't like them all that much, but a long story...), and yes, they don't really smell at all.
Luckily both my dog and cat (actually the rugrat, too) have excellent skin and are on a good diet, so their smell is all but non-existent (even due to visitors) I bathe my dog rarely and the cat gets a bath every now and then, too...hehe, just cause..
I used to have a dog with allergies and bad ears (despite all kinds of treatments), and boy, he smelled horrible no matter how many times you would bathe him.
Ferrets are the cutest, wildest most playful little things....i'm very tempted...

the word i was looking for is actually "secreting" oils...
as in this quote of a health-site:
Your skin is actually the largest organ of your body. It has oil glands
that are constantly secreting oils onto your skin.
why can't english be as easy as german??

Well, english is a germanic language... has a lot in common. One thing that always drove me nuts about german is how they combine entire sentences into one word. I lived just outside Baden Baden for most of the 80s.
