African soft furred rats?
Anyone keep these?
I am going to attempt and get a breeding facility up and running for these guys, as they seem like they would be a good staple, for my boa constrictor for a while, while they are bigger than mice, they are smaller than domesticated rats.
Can someone give me some advice?

Re: African soft furred rats?
i have a trio. And my two girls are about to POP. i keep them like any other rats. in bins with aspen bedding. i will say that they really like their veges and fruits and not much else. OH YEAH, AND THE HAVE LITTLE TO NO ODOR WHAT SO EVER. I had mine on the same bedding for 3 weeks, with no stink. It gets too nasty with poo long before you will smell them!

Lol! It took me a while to figure it out.
Are they as profolic, as most rats and mice, or are they like spiny mice?

Re: African soft furred rats?
Hey! has anyone here seen those giant African rats? Totally fabulous! I think they are banned now for some disease or parasite problem. I'm telling you buddy! I held an adult (2-3kgs?) a couple of years ago at an expo in San Antonio.. a total thrill, I'm guessing they have a bite worse than a Rottweiler! .. who cares?! totally neat critters.
.
Have fun.

Re: African soft furred rats?
Good info on them here...
Multimammate Mice
Heritage is in Canada, so I wouldn't dream of trying to get them from there, but the site seems to have a good deal of info about these and many more exotic mammals.

I believe that is one of the type of rats my Vet breeds.
He lets some of them go on his property so his wild / pet Coyote has something to eat. His wife hates the rats as there is a really big one living in there garage sometimes and it's not afraid of her. LOL
take care
Tom

Re: African soft furred rats?
They can have even bigger litters. The people I get my snake food from breeds them and he's had a litters of 16 to 18. They don't get very big as they are sold for food in a snap.

Re: African soft furred rats?
I am sold on them as well I think. I think that it may make a huge difference when trying to switch African colubrids to domestic feeder rodents. I wish I knew who the rodent people were at all the Columbia shows. All I remember is that one is a skinny girl that wears a top hat. I would much rather line up some to pick up rather than shipping. But they are definitely on my short list of critters to add.

Re: African soft furred rats?
Oh, and yesterday I was actually discussing them with another herper who has kept them before. He gave warning that sometimes the mothers will VIGOROUSLY defend their offspring if you try to remove them.

Jeez! I sure hope you're joking about somebody releasing these or that we're not talking about the same critters.. these things are as large as an opossum.
.
Oh what the heck, if we can have 10 million exotic antelope in Texas alone, what's a few big pouched rats? Could be the next craze after the 'sport' and target shooters kill all the Prairie dogs, ground squirrels and etc.. and who will complain about people exploding a rat's head just for kicks?
.
Have fun with that.

The thing is, is that I need them to be fully weaned before I feed them to my snake, anyway so thats not too bad.
except for the fact that I will need some pinks for my geckos.
