Mouse Deer - The Deer with Fangs
Larger Malay Chevrotain (Mouse Deer) (Tragulus napu) are small deer from the Malay Peninsula and Indonesia. The average adult body weight is 11 - 18 pounds. The legs are very thin and delicate, about the diameter of a pencil. Instead of antlers or horns, males have a set of elongated upper canines or tusks which protrude from the sides of the mouth like fangs. Females for the most part are constantly pregnant, often having just a 1.5 to 2 hour 'breather' between giving birth and becoming pregnant again.

Over populated only because humans have destroyed and/or altered much of their habitat.

We call them 'Sang Kancil' here in Malaysia rather than its english common name. They're pretty tasty, but massive deforestation has affected their populations adversely. I would class them as vulnerable at this stage. The aboriginal people have always relished mouse deer, so it's part of their culture. The conventional hunters with shotguns tend to go for bigger game, such as wild boards and 'Kijang', which is the term for deer. If we didn't lose so much forest each year, there would be plenty of kancils to go around. Awesome animals anyways.
Cheers
hans
