The Mustelid Mind
How the Ferret brain really works
by F.A. Hoffman
Hide your treats because someone largerthan you may be near.
Steal first. Ask questions later.
When in doubt, run away.
Never look as if you understood the question.
No shoe hidden can stand to be alone, so hide its match too.
Noise is for fun. Generate lots.
A good plant is a dead plant-or at least one that has been removed from it's pot.
Never trip anyone who can fall directly on you.
Beg for treats. It's fun to see how quickly the humans can be trained.
Aim for the coffee table---you might make it!
Never eat today what can be saved to gather ants later.
A chance to play is a chance to poop outside your bedroom.
Be happy. Don't worry.
Walk low and carry a long tail.
Here is Bandette being nosey again!

He's cute. This is my Mynx, she's a brat, but I love her.

I am trying to find a rescue ferret to be a friend for her, if anyone knows of a ferret needing a home, let me know, please. Thanks!

hey
i always wanted a ferrett but never got one because of the snakes n stuff!
do you guys manage alright??? any "bad" things happen???
what about the smell of the ferrett, does the boa recognize that as food??? what about the boa's scent- does this freak the ferrett out!
inquiring minds wanna know
i found a place that has awesome ferrets and i never get because i am afraid of the conflict thing. i know i'll be with the ferret all the time, but i dont wanna upset the snakes.
its a hard choice- snake food as a pet.......

You know every time I go into a pet store the first thing I smell is those stinking Ferrets. But my inlaws have 6 ferrets that stay in the living room and I never smell them. So I asked why. They said their vet told them to feed Iams catfood and they wouldn't stink and it's actually better for them. Go figure just thought it was worth mentioning. Nice looking ferrets guys.

cb,
As far as snakefood as pets. Mynx is running loose right now and I haev two snakes in their tubs eating. No problems. That was my fear, actually that she would get out and kill the snakes. It all boils down to management, escape-proof cages, supervison when loose, etc. The smell thing, yeah, if I miss changing her litter box you can smell her. I bathe her with ferrt shampoo about every two weeks. That seems to help. She was spayed and descented before I got her, but they do have musk glands arond their neck area and that's the part that needs special attention while bathing. THey are very neat pets, interactive and curious. Lots of fun just to watch.
Mynx is actually getting a little pudgy and lazy, so I want to get her a friend to give her more of an excuse to exercise a bit. That and I think it would be hilarious to watch two of them playing.
Overall, I am glad I got her, not that hard to care for and really rewarding little pets.

They do make very good pets...I have not had a single problem with mine and the snakes. And I have 8 ferrets...it is like a small herd when they are all loose. As long as you don't mind things going missing. They are very good at hiding stuff!
Like just-me said as long as you keep up on the litter there is not really a smell...
(side note I still have three that are looking for an adoptive home. I took them in with the intention of adopting them out..I just don't need 8! That is too many for one house..lol)

CB76...you read my mind... well kind of.. Thats the same reason thats been keeping me from getting a few sugar gliders.. Id love to have some, but I think itd drive my snakes insane looking for the source of that "delicious smell"...
Do any of yall keep sugar gliders?? Notice any attraction to them from your snakes?
JoeRissa, as far as the smell thing goes, its probably the same reason as when you walk into a "pet store snake room" it smells like a public gas station bathroom... but well kept "private" snake rooms smell no different than any other room in the house...
Have I ever mentioned I DESPISE pet stores???
Oh yea, Ophiophagus...that face is screaming nothing but TROUBLE... I bet she's quite a handfull... Im guessing her motto's "who me?? I'd never do that"...

JD I have a pair of sugargliders and I keep them in a seperate room Just to make sure they are away from the snakes (an expensive meal) I hate to say it but I think a sugar glider would trear the snake up pretty bad. My female tried to attack my pittbull through the cage. I feed them a lot of seed and they like to through there food around a lot so I have a house mouse now and then and if it wanders into the cage she kills and eats it. A couple of my breeder mice have escaped and met there maker that way.

Countryboy,
I knew a guy who thought it would be cool to set up an aviary with budgies, parakeets and finches along with having some sugar glider nests in a big live tree. Well... after a couple days he started realizing there were an awful lot of free feathers and a lot less birds in the aviary. Boy are sugar gliders messy when they rip apart another animal. =)
I've also seen the same thing when a guy thought he would keep a sugar glider and a southern flying squirrel in the same cage. "They look kinda the same, right?" Poor squirrel.
Though, a local shop had a jungle carpet get out of his cage, make its way into the sugar glider cage. When they came and opened in the morning, the carpet python was so fat he couldn't get back out of the sugar glider's cage. He ate four of the little furballs. Pricey. =)
