If you want a decent size dog that's not too big, and not too small...get a doberman!! excellent dogs, very well mannered and they are very protective but not possesive. My friend owns a dobie, and he is like a spoiled baby, but when someone he doesnt know comes a-knocking, man Dale can bark and scare someone good.. lol
|
Dobermans are my absolute favorite breed. Rotts are my close second.
But I would choose a pound dog. They get purebreds also. The one close to me has a 7 month old female rotti, a young female husky, 2 pointers, rat terrier, male lhasa alpso, german shepard, female young doberman, chihuahua, and the list goes on. All are 100% pure.
Of coarse a lot of it is because of the hurricane damage in the area. Pets lost their homes too.

that about the truth of it too because the best dog i ever owned came staight out of the pound that and mutts because the purebreeds have been interbread through out the years! mutts/mixies seem to have better amune systems also!

Rat terriers are cool, but very small and very hyper.
A buddys mom had one a while back and it was cool to have a dog that could catch the rubber ball before you even threw it
Huskys are great also, the male I used to have.. no way at all to keep him in the yard.
He would either dig out or simply do a flat footed bounce and be over the 4' fence.
Rotties... way too over bred here and are getting particularly stupid (thanks puppy mills...) I don't see too many dobies here now, unlike about 10 years ago when they were the dog to have.. no idea how it is around the rest of the country tho.. but the ones I have dealt with were good dogs as long as they weren't trained for attack, which many rednecks here did without realizing that dogs trained for that will eventually turn on their owner/trainer. As for obedience, they were ok.

Bah@ 2 minute rule to edit posts!
I love huskys too Eddie, but my problem with them is they suffer from separation anxiety.. they need to feel like they're part of the family. They are decendents of the wolf, and they of course live in packs, but when its a human/dog relationship they can be very destructive in the home and chew on anything they're mouths find when they're alone and feel alone.

Of course i'm going to say a Chinese Shar-Pei is the best. Smart, Protective, Non destructive, Quiet, and very clean.

I agree, plus it won't cost ya an arm and a leg.
Shane, if you don't want a hyper dog then a Pug isn't the way to go either as they can be quite hyper.
Also, are you lookin to let the dog inside the house frequently? Cuz then you have to think about the shedding factor.

Eddie you have pointed out a lot of good points about those breeds.
Unfortunately, all the purebreds have their genetic issues.
Rotts are predisposed to hip issues and osteosarcoma. Demodex as puppies.
Dobermans have Wobblers, cardiomyopothy, thyroid, and Von Wilderbrandt's Disease.
Huskys are hips and eyes.
Pugs have elongated soft palates and can pass out, also stinotic nares.
Wolf hybrids can get rage syndrome and depending on the mix half issues with that breed.
Bloodhounds are hips, Gastric torsion, allergies, eye issues, and heart.
Not too sure on Foxhounds, we don't see many in my area. Not too much hunting in Florida.

Oh don't get me started on these guys. I love them very much, but the breed as a whole has major issues.
Entropian, skin fold issues, allergies, Shar-Pei fever, elongated soft palate and cardiac is to name a few.
90% of the ones that come in are aggressive and are a hand full.

Bahhh.. I dont care. I like the breed. Luckily we have good breeders in the area that have bred most of the issues out of their lines. Mine can be aggressive, but only when I tell him to be. There are a lot out there that are a mess though. Really good guard dog. Specially when you have a few thousand dollars worth of snakes in your home.

honestly, im not a big fan of pure breds, they seem to have most health issues, and life span seems shorter (they say no, but every one i've had has had a shorter life span than my mixed breeds)
My favorite is a german shepherd/rat terrior mix. such beautiful animals, the smaller figure of the terrier, but the appearance of the shepherd, and the cute curly tail of the terrier

lol notice she hadnt said anything about german shepards yet?
...note the operative word yet
Shar-peis are cute dogs no doubt, but they smell, no matter how much you bathe them to get that "wet dog' smell out its always there because of the oils their skin produces.. they have very sensitive skin and can dry out easily.

ed r; english bulldogs are the world's greatest dogs. i have 2 and the only problem is they are rather pricey. they are easy to train, loyal to a fault and if you look up mellow it will show a bulldog. as long as you don't mind shedding, which they do 24/7/365.

If you are worried about shedding. Just about any short or long haired dog will give you a problem unless they have a coat that has to be trimmed. I have had sooo many dogs over my lifetime (all rescuses) the Mini SchSchnauzer is my fav. They are laid back untill you start to play. Very smart but not too smart for there own good, and don't shed. If you are looking for bigger there is a local breeder of Giant's here that sells for around 800.00 Mini's around 250.00 or so. You can also find mixes in the pounds that are already housebroken that is a real plus.

yup i agree... every dog sheds, no matter what..now some shed more than others yes.. but its a matter of is the dog hypoallergetic or not. Pugs are short haired and they shed like crazy!! lol
Now if health, shedding or anything else bad wasnt an issue, i would so get a rough collie aka Lassies.. my family used to breed em and they are soooooo beautiful. <3
