R.I.P. Harley
Harley, my two and a half year old Pekingese/Shih-Tzu mix just very unexpectedly had to be put to sleep last Thursday due to a brain tumor. I have been an absolute sobbing mess since it happened, and feel very… broken right now. Despite everything that has gone wrong this year, all of the family and medical issues, tough choices, deaths, drama, problems and accidents, I can’t remember a time where I have cried this hard. Harley was my very cuddly ‘teddy bear’ dog who always seemed to know when I was upset and would crawl on my lap or snuggle under my chin and just stay that way until I was feeling better, and now he is gone. Of my other two dogs Bentley, my five month old Labrador took it especially hard. Harley of the two dogs was Bentley’s best friend. He spent hours walking around the house whining and looking for Harley after I got back from the vet’s office. It very much hurt to see that. It has been a week today and I keep on thinking that I am doing well, and then something reminds me of him and I just break down. I miss him so much.
RIP, baby boy, I love you and miss you more than I could possibly say.

Re: R.I.P. Harley
I am so sorry for your loss...Harley had a huge personality packed into that little body and obviously loved to share it! Dog's lives are too short anyway, that was really unfair! I have always loved & rescued dogs (mine always come from the shelter or in two cases, the person themselves who wanted to rehome their dog) and after consulting with my two four-footed companions, we think he'd want you to think of the good times you had together & try not to be sad...(this even put tears in my eyes!)
I'm sorry to hear your year has been a mess too...I hope this means all the bad stuff is cleared out for a long time to come! Hugs....

Re: R.I.P. Harley
That's gotta be like a kick in the guts.. You're a caring person and you'll never quite get over it.. but you can celebrate your time with that pup by some day putting your love and attention into another.
.
So sorry.

Re: R.I.P. Harley
Thank you so much guys; I can’t tell you how much I sincerely appreciate it. It is a huge comfort for me to be able to talk to fellow animal lovers about this, especially as the typical response I’ve been getting is something to the effect of ‘It’s just a dog. There are Shih-tzus at the pet store and in the paper, I don't see what the big deal is, just go buy another one'. It is hard to describe that you can’t just go out and replace a beloved member of your family to people who aren’t pet lovers. Harley was such an important part of my life, and I loved him dearly… I know that part of getting a dog or a cat is understanding and accepting that their lifespan is much shorter than ours, but I never expected to lose him at only two and a half.
On a slightly happier note, Bentley seems to be starting to get out of his depression somewhat in the past couple of days… his behavior is still off since Harley has been gone and he still looks for him, but it is nowhere near the extent that it was the first week. I am hoping to arrange a play-date with him and my friend’s sheltie mix, hopefully that will help lift his spirits some. He loves other dogs, and Doom, my Chihuahua/Terrier mix has a very low play-drive and tends to prefer camping out on my lap to entertaining the giant brown monster with a tendency to drop squeaky toys on his head in an invitation to play.

Re: R.I.P. Harley
They can never be replaced. It leaves a hole in your heart that eventually gets covered over with a scar. There is not a day that goes by that I don't miss my Siamese. I thought it would be easier to lose him because he was old and I was expecting it. But it wasn't. This is the price we pay for loving so much. The degree of pain correlates directly to how much of a part they played in our lives.

I feel this with you too. I know how it is.
Harley looks like he was an absolute sweetheart of a doggie. And I believe he was happy with you and had a great life because of your total love and care of him.

Re: R.I.P. Harley
I am so very sorry.
I know how hard it is because the attachment is just amazingly strong.
When seeing him/her so happy when you get home from a days work it still breaks my heart when i lost my chihuahua and deep inside he left a piece of my heart dark without his presence.
again i am sorry for your loss.
