Florida Dog Owners Beware!!!
Florida: SB 1276 passes committee « Stop BSL
Here we go again... first the reptile bills and now a new Breed Specific Law for dogs in Florida...
If you love your dog and dont want the government telling you what type of pet you can have you need to make your voice heard!! Please contact your senators and tell them you oppose Breed Specific Laws. If you WANT the government telling you that you have to muzzle your dog, carry millions of dollars in liability insurance (and GOOD LUCK finding an insurance company that will write that policy!!), attend mandatory classes that the government selects for you then just sit back in your homes and do nothing.
Although American Pit Bull Terriers are at the forefront of the media and this bill it is not about ONE BREED! If you think they can restrict ownership on APBT then your Rottweiler, German Shepard, Doberman, Akita, Chow CHow, Mastiffs and many many others may just be next.
We have a canine breed specific bill in Florida that will give every county the right to create and enforce laws regarding whatever "breed" they deem "dangerous" and the bill, SB 1276 actually passed the first committee by a vote of 7 yea, 2 nay's!!!
There are two more committee votes before it can go to the Senate Floor (the same is happening in the house also)... I will post the dates of those as they are announced.
If you value your rights and want to be able to keep your family pets... please contact your senator and representatives and tell them you do not support Breed Specific Laws!!!
thanks!!!!

Re: Florida Dog Owners Beware!!!
This is really getting old. Soon it will be like Orwell's "1984", soon they'll limit how many children we can have.

Re: Florida Dog Owners Beware!!!
I think there should be more of an aggressive process for owning problem-oriented canines, other mammals and yes, even reptiles.
There's no doubt that there are no problem-pets only problem-owners, but the case remains the same.
I also fully endorse the Chinese 1-to-1 notion and think it's one of the most progressive bits of legislation modern government has seen. I think that it's suitable to their specific population capacity and that the United States could do well with a similar law, especially for those of us working American and otherwise tax-paying groups in this country.
There is far too much abuse of privilege in the United States. Everyone takes everything for granted, manipulates and strains the system. Everyone wants to blame the government for the way things are, but I see few calling to account those that train their Pits specifically for fighting-purposes, those that train them as attack-dogs or encourage their naturally violent tendencies, or even those problem-dogs whose inadequacies are ignored and simply NOT mentioned when they shove it on someone else via their local Craig's List.
The same analysis can be applied to every institution of member or ownership.
You want a big snake, but can't take care of it, so you set it loose. You want a Bob Cat but not the burden of proper security, a chimp but lacking the sense of mind that though sometimes companionable, they are feral and horrifyingly unpredictable.
Still others want free money, so they take unemployment benefits far beyond what is necessary by nefarious means, welfare, government aid, some have even turned child-rearing in to an assembly-line affair to increase their benefits, while increasing their money clip of food-stamps, adding a percentage to the density of poverty and dragging all but the highest monetary classes down just like the decreasing property values in heavily-unemployed Section 8 and dodgy suburban areas.
No, I'm sorry to play the Devil's Advocate, but given it all, I think this country could do with a bit more regulation after all.

Re: Florida Dog Owners Beware!!!
I have no problem with training, regulation and even licensing. But when they outlaw it completely I have a problem. The Reptiles of Concern rules are not only perfectly acceptable, they really were needed. Why not have a canine's of concern? You could be trained and licensed to sell, breed or own a pitbull.

Re: Florida Dog Owners Beware!!!
well i just typed this whole long response and somehow it disappeared.
In a nutshell... I agree with you AGA, on many of your points. What I don't agree with is any type of breed specific legislation. Substitute Retic for Pitt Bull and Berm for Labrador and maybe you can understand why putting a regulation on just a "pitt bull" isn't a solution or practical. Not to mention how many mixed breeds there are in America. How would those dogs be classified?
Anything that has teeth can and will bite to some extent. I don't think this legislation is going to affect dog fighting at all. Dog fighting is already illegal. What this bill is meant to do is restrict people from owning APBT and possibly other "dangerous breeds" such as Rotties, Sheppards, etc.. because these misguided lawmakers believe its the breed that is dangerous. (it would be funny if this wasn't so serious)
Although I am against "big government" so to speak I do think that breeders of any kind should have to be licensed. I also believe any animal sold in the US should come with a health certificate and microchip. There's your culpability for strays and animals "let loose". I think it is ridiculous that anyone can breed anything and sell it to anyone with no repercussions. I mean, as a woman, I cant even "donate" my eggs without a full health check and psych exam (yes I have donated my eggs, as I'm not a breeder and don't plan to be)....but I can pimp out my Cane Corso as many times as her uterus will allow as a "hobby"...while I rake in $1000 a pup. (and no my dog never has been bred and although she is purebred she is a rescue)
ok, Ive rambled enough..
