Yep. I believe this to be true. Most people who own pit bulls shouldn't own them, whether it be for the stereotypical negative purposes OR the bleeding heart, train-it-out of them people. Both of those types of people ruin it for the breed. A lot of the people with good intentions often end up making things worse. They truly have it rough.

Also, back on track with dog parks. Has anyone brought up the laziness factor? We live in a society of instant gratification. A lot of these people don't take the time to actually walk/run their dogs on their own. You can buy a dog on the internet these days, after all. A lot of them will sit around and idly chat while fido roughs up another dog. They won't know what's going on until it's too late.

All in all, I don't think they're all that great of an idea. They often are the source of parasites, diseases, injuries(dogs and people), conflicts... basically they are a lawsuit waiting to happen in my book.

Re: Dog parks?

Gun: I was walking through a public park at about 2am (I was homeless at the time) with my dogs. Jennyr and my wolf-dog Dodge. We stopped and I sat on a bench to have a cigarette. This guy starts walking up the path, and I wasn't comfortable with it, so I put out my cig and stood to leave. He caught up to me, pulled out a handgun, and gave me his proposition. Involving my bag and a couple other things. Dodge cowered behind me as he was afraid of men, but Jennyr started snarling and growling and closing the short distance between me and the guy. The man thought better of his idea and turned and ran.

Felon: I worked at a dog boutique(worst job EVER, for the record) and Jennyr and I were walking home after a closing shift. It was maybe 11pm, so not very late, and it was down a busy street. This guy, average as anything, comes walking towards us. Jennyr shoulder-checks my knee and stood sideways in front of me, hackles up and growling. Surprised, I shoved him to keep walking, but he leaned his weight against my legs and wouldn't let me walk. He was glaring at this guy, and the closer that man got, the louder and scarier Jennyr got. Teeth bared, drooling, hackles up, and snarling. The man got close enough and Jennyr started barking his fool head off. The guy made this weird hand gesture and turned and walked through a row of hedges. No path, he just fought his way through the bushes and out of sight. Jennyr relaxed a few moments later and we walked home.

The next day I recognized the man as Jennyr and I walked in to work. He was sitting on the corner, begging for money. Jennyr snarled and started barking as soon as he saw him, and I was lucky to be able to drag Jennyr away and into the store. The guy's sign? "Felon. Can't get work. Anything helps." He had three teardrop tattoos under his eye, a spider web on one hand and a black widow on the other. We can't pass this guy in a CAR without Jennyr starting up. Jennyr HATES this man, and would have killed him I'm positive if he'd gotten close enough.

German Shepherd: Walking Jennyr up to the store and back, and on the way home, this German Shepherd jumped it's fence. All I heard was toenails on pavement, and before I could turn to look I was knocked to the ground and being shaken. Only lasted a few second before Jennyr toppled the dog out into the street, and was actively -pushing- the shepherd away from me. The other dog kept biting and shaking at Jennyr, but eventually Jennyr got a few good bites in to his head and the shepherd turned and ran back to what I'm assuming was it's house. Jennyr stood and watched him, then came back to me and waited for me to pick my things up so we could go home.

And, the requested pics:

I'm waiting for the other pics (new ones!) to download, then I'll post. And, one of Dodge is in the ones uploading now. So there'll be one of him, too.

Re: Dog parks?

WOAH. Sorry they're huge, settings must have gotten altered on my "auto resize" on photobucket. LOL

Yeah, he did get shot. In the face, actually, but thankfully it was with a pellet gun.

So, he and I were walking (man, you think he and I walk enough??) around the park we encountered the guy with the gun. This was.... 5 months?? after the guy-with-a-gun incident. I had Jennyr off leash (because I was super stupid) and Jennyr was about half a block ahead of me. I had him under voice control, so I wasn't too concerned.

Jennyr walks up to a mail box, and is sniffing around it's base, his back feet are still on the pavement of the street. This guy stands up and walks across the lawn to Jennyr. I heard him say something, but I couldn't make out what it was, and Jennyr looked up and wagged his tail. The guy then points what looked to me at the time like a rifle, at Jennyr and fired.

Jennyr screamed and turned and ran back to me, blood pouring down his face. Being the person I am, I turned red-hot mad and ran to the guy, smacking him repeatedly with my hat and screaming at him. His excuse?

... It's fantastic, get this, he said...

"I thought it was a coyote."

Re: Dog parks?

There were no vet bills. I took Jennyr home and dug the pellet out of his face with some tweezers. He -could- have gotten one stitch (two after I finally found the pellet >.o) but really... it wasn't that necessary in my opinion. I kept neosporin on it and he did just fine. He still has a scar, though, but it's tiny.

I tried to find a pic of that, but I don't think I have one. Hmm. I'll try and take one. lol

Personally I don't think he really thought Jennyr was a coyote. I think he didn't see me and thought he'd have some fun shooting a "stray" dog.

"I thought it was a coyote."
lol. never mind the pit bull...you better run from the owner! see, snakes and pits can be dangerous.

I tried to find a pic of that, but I don't think I have one. Hmm. I'll try and take one. lol

Personally I don't think he really thought Jennyr was a coyote. I think he didn't see me and thought he'd have some fun shooting a "stray" dog.
Thats what I figured. People are sick, and people with pellet guns dont seem to realize how bad they can scare a person. Those guns look real, and to see someone point one at your dog would be heart breaking. Just a few months ago me and my mom expierienced an idiot with a pellet gun. We heard loud Bass from a car, and when we looked out our huge front window, we saw the car, then saw a black pistol stick out the window and aim at the window. Me and my mom actually jumped to the floor and then heard 2 really loud "ping" sounds. Right when I heard the sound I was so relieved cus I knew it wasnt real, but those couple seconds before the sound, I thought it was a real pistol.

Re: Dog parks?

Pellet guns can be absolutely terrifying, yes. There was a solid five seconds (which, when your heart stops is a VERY long time) that I thought I was going to watch my dog die.

For me, there is nothing more frightening than the idea of my dog dying; let alone by a gun in the hands of some jerk. Actually, that right there ties into your question about dog parks.

In the off chance that someone brings truly aggressive dog to the park, and that dog were to go after my dog... My dog would not win. If that other dog didn't know when he'd won, that would mean the death of my dog.

And that is a risk I am NOT going to take with my heart and soul.
