Re: Dog parks?
the seperation anxiety definatly needs some work! Thats gonna get really annoying really quick. Not to mention, some dogs can damage property, and THEMSELVES when suffering with seperation anxiety. Ive seen dogs that wore their paws down to the bone trying to dig through the concrete patio to get under a fence when its owner left

Re: Dog parks?
oh wow... they're GREAT dogs. They're fiercely loyal but so intelligent. That's a great great dog to have around. Even if she is the dogs mommy, the dog would probably do anything to protect you or your home as well...
they do GREAT in obedience training. They outshine most other dogs because they're so happy to please you

devin read something that said for devin to not even say goodbye to bella. just leave and not to make a big deal on arriving back home. devin is at work right now and i am watching bella. bella is doing good except for every half hour she will let out a whine. devin is looking up anything she can on seperation anxieties. i had shepards mostly my whole life, i gave up on furry animals once i got my first snake. i know mine protected me when it was a must but not to this extreme. we always lock bella in her kennel when we both leave the house. she has not acted up to much from what we can tell.

Re: Dog parks?
Personally, I hate dog parks.
My number 1 reason, is that I can't take my dog to the dog park without instantly getting dirty looks from every other person there. If I continue to stay there after getting dirty looks, someone comes over to me and I get an earful about how I'm n irresponsible owner and that it's "only a matter of time" before he kills someone else's dog. Why? Because he weighs 100 pounds and is a pit mix (he looks obviously pit.)
Forget the fact that he only plays there with ME, ignores the other dogs, never growls, never asserts dominance over other dogs, and essentially treats the other dogs like they don't exist. There has never been a problem.
Secondly, I don't trust other people's dogs. Not that I don't have faith in the -dogs-.... I have NO faith in other humans as trainers, and to have properly socialized their dogs. Jennyr has been chomped, rolled, aggressively chased, and snapped at a number of times at dog parks. That was enough to make me stop taking him. Which is just as well, he never really cared for them much to begin with.
Third - every time someone's dog has actually been AGGRESSIVE that I've seen, they clip up their dog and high-tail it away without leaving any contact info, no apology, and no offer to help.
And lastly... Most people who go to dog parks don't know a single thing about dog behavior. They can't tell the difference between a warning and an attack, and a lot of people when their own dog growls, will chide it, smack it, or yell at it. which results in a dog that has no warnings before it attacks.
Dog parks, in my book, are a huge no.
Getting together with your friends who have dogs, or going to a group obedience class where proof of shots/alteration are a pre-req is a big yes, though. As are controlled walks and teaching your dog proper greeting with other dogs and a polite leash manner.

i would have to say shepards are for sure one of the smartest dogs and they do whatever it takes to please their owner. i had one that would let itself out the back door to go potty. he could never figure out how to let himself back in though. lol

It's not necessarily the pit bulls that start fights, but some will finish them and it gets blamed on them because they are pit bulls.

Yep. Pits were bred for dog fighting, it's hard to re-wire a dogs mind to NOT be dog aggressive. Some dogs are just too "red hot" and can't be around other dogs. Unfortunate.

Re: Dog parks?
My boy doesn't start or finish fights unless he's in his own home, or it's another animal/person attacking ME. If it's another dog on neutral territory attacking him, he flops onto his back and screams until I pull the other dog off. *eyeroll* He's such a baby sometimes.

Not necessarily unfortunate. A dog doesn't have to be around other dogs to be happy. I don't know if that's what you're getting at though. There are plenty of "hot" ones that mind their owners well enough to work in obedience and other sports in controlled environments.

oh no, I just meant that it's unfortunate that people have pre-conceived notions about a group of dogs that are doing what they were bred to do, and the fact that most people think that letting them roam free at a dog park will change them.

Re: Dog parks?
That's one of the hundreds of reasons why I love him. When he NEEDS to be, he's an unstoppable force. This has only happened three times that I can remember. Once involved a gun, once involved a convicted felon, and once involved a german shepherd that had decided I need to die. The only blood he drew was the other dog's, but when that dog turned and ran, Jennyr stayed right next to me and watched it go.
He's been lacerated, punctured, torn, and even shot himself. But as long as the threat wasn't towards me, he just lays there and screams until I intervene and he can get away. It's funny; I got him because I was hoping (I was a very dumb child) that he would be huge, and mean, and hate EVERYTHING and EVERYONE but me.
Thankfully, despite my childish hopes, he grew into a big ole lug who wouldn't save his own butt if it were covered in Kong stuff'n's.

This has happened. Jennyr is REALLY weirded out by smaller dogs. He had a 4 pound chihuahua hanging off his face once. He just stood there and screamed and screamed.... By the time I pried the small little punk dog off him, I was nearly dead of laughter. He could have shaken his head and been rid of the chihuahua. Nope. He panicked and gave up.
We had a "doxiepoo" foster for awhile that regularly beat Jennyr up over little things. The pug, Pickles, that we have now gets the better of him all the time, too. Especially over food.
Back onto the original topic though, dogs do not need dog parks to be happy, healthy, or socialized. Getting friends together with their dogs to romp in a backyard does just as much good. For exercise, I go hiking twice a week with my girlfriend and her dachshund. I always take Jennyr with me now that he's back to being fit and healthy.
The lack of regulation at dog parks regarding altered/vaccinated dogs is a huge set back. Anyone can take any dog to a dog park. No one is there to check paperwork. It's a huge danger.
Not to mention, 95% of the dog owning community IMO(!!) are not capable trainers. THAT is scarier to me than the vaccination/alteration thing.
That, and I hate getting dirty looks. No matter what the reason.
