Feel good story for the day
This will make you all warm and fuzzy inside....
Yesterday, I spent the day painting at the cat shelter where I volunteer. We are trying to make the place look pretty to attract more visitors to adopt the cats. There were 5 of us there painting. One just happened to be the shelter veterinarian who is rarely ever on site. The shelter is normally closed on Wednesdays. That's why we chose the day to paint.
At about noon, the doorbell rang. We weren't sure whether to answer it. After all the shelter was closed. But we did. Someone had a newborn orange and white kitten they found at their job. The mother was nowhere to be found. Later they brought in 3 of its littermates. What a stroke of luck that we were there and that the vet just happened to be there. She stopped painting and tended to the tiny little kittens and was able to save their lives. True story.
Awwwwww

Good story. Although, what would make them in need of somebody "saving their lives"?

Re: Feel good story for the day
Kittens need their mom to take care of them for 6 weeks or so after they are born (they are not like snakes). These kittens were days old and lost their mom. They needed to be fed around the clock and cared for like a newborn. Had the shelter not been open, they may have died within a few hours. The people who found them did not know what to do with them, and the other shelters are pretty far away. The vet and shelter staff know how to care for them.

Re: Feel good story for the day
People are really bad about finding kittens (and rabbits) after mom has gone hunting and bringing them into the shelters, when mom, in fact, would often return to the babies.
Either way, its nice to hear that they were taken care of. Hopefully they will find wonderful homes

Re: Feel good story for the day
My wife and I hand fed and raised many kittens when she worked at a vets. They are fun to try to get a bottle into when they are thrashing around. lol. And Stargazer, I am not even going to ask if you thought about having some free food for the snakeys!! The question really is, did you think they were cute enough to bring one home?

Re: Feel good story for the day
Voodoo, you have a really good point that often mom is out hunting and will return. But sometimes she gets chased off, or you just don't know. I rescued a litter once that was in a laundry room wall and brought them to a vet. Later the mom did appear. I brought her there too, so the story had a happy ending.
And no, hartsock, I never once looked at the kittens as snake food. But the thought did cross my mind, "I can't decide who is cuter....a baby kitten or a baby snake."

Re: Feel good story for the day
Thanks for volunteering at the shelter. Such constructive use of free time makes the world a better place.

Re: Feel good story for the day
Thanks, John. To me, there is no choice but to volunteer. There are about 250 cats there and not enough love for all of them. Fortunately, those little kittens will probably find homes. Everyone wants a kitten. It is the adults who are so hard to adopt out.
BTW, none of the other shelter volunteers like snakes.

 can't decide....
You know I was kidding about the food thing, why say something so painful as being unable to decide who is cuter? I am sure glad your babies can't read. lol.
Seriously though it is cool that you volunteer that way. As far as animals being viewed as "throw aways" I think cats top that list. I am surprised at how many people thinking nothing of killing a cat; I know people who purposely try to hit them with their car if they see them on the road, or course those are the same people who hit a snake and keep backing over it to make sure it is dead.
And, I'll give you that a kitten is pretty cute too.
