BTW, 15 years ago, my roommie and I were in the same situation with a cat. She was having her first heat, and we were told to wait until it ended to have her spayed. Well, one day she sneaked out and got pregnant by her "Wicked Uncle Ernie" (we used to call him) who was waiting patiently by the back door. She ended up having her kittens on my bed, and I got to keep one....little black and white one with white cheeks. Destructo has now been by my side for 14 years (on May 1st) and is the love of my life!!!!

I hate to sound bad, but I'm going to... I would still get her spayed right now!
Do you know that the father is felV/FIV(feline leukemia/feline aids) negative??
There are just too many kitties out there that need homes.

70,000,004 homeless cats
it really should be mandatory to spay/neuter all cats and dogs who don't have legitimate reasons to breed. so much attention is given to exotics that these domesticated animal problems get overlooked

if you'd read her original post, she WAS planning on spaying the cat. cat goes into heat, gets out, and gets pregnant on accident from a male who was outside, hanging around. its not like she was being irresponsible and not wanting to get the cat spayed at all and let it run around free as can be outside not caring.

i read her original post but i still think that it was irresponsible to let the cat get out. i've kept ALL types of animals for many years and they don't just get out unless i screw up big time. i would totally consider it a mistake to allow it to happen under most circumstances, because it IS a mistake. if the door is opened with caution and the windows are kept close, it probably doesn't get out.
not the end of the world of course, what's a few more cats, you know?
sorry if i don't agree with less than stellar pet ownership considering all the animals in shelters waiting for euthanization. it is a real problem in this country. just because we CAN have something doesn't mean we should but i'm all for enjoying animals. i'm all for enjoying a case of beer too.
you just have to be responsible or either can cause problems, right?

yaknow.. cats can get out of the smallest spaces. tehre have been times ive opened the door to walk out and the cat was suddenly outside - from across the front room. just becuase the cat got out doesnt mean she was irresponsible at all.
"less than stellar" pet ownership? my vet wouldnt spay my cat till after her third heat - that was a nightmare in tiself! we actually had one male cat rip the screen door to shreds and get into the house! i think you are being harsh on someone who doesnt deserve it - ESPECIALLY since she wants to do the RESPONSIBLE thing and get the cat spayed.
like i said, its not like she tuned the cat out, didnt care if it was spayed at all and doesnt give a crap that its pregnant.

Not a very smart vet in my opinion. If a animal is spayed before it's first heat there is a avery slim to nil chance of it getting mammary tumors. I think he just wanted you to be tortured by a female in heat!
I know she was planning on spaying the cat. I don't think her irresponsible, cats get out. But I think the responsible thing to do is to still get her spayed.

i never said you said that... i think shes still going to get the cat spayed... but i still think that calling someone irresponsible for an accident is wrong.

I know you didn't Tracy....
It is a little harsh....
Cats that are in heat will find a way out or drive you crazy enough to kick her out! (No one should ever do that)

wow lol. ok, irresponsible is defined as "showing lack of care for consequences"
you may consider it overkill to make 100% sure an animal stays in confined quarters, but i don't, no big deal that we disagree about what being responsible is. if you care about the consequences, then in this case, there is no reason it should have gotten out unless it can open locked doors and windows, which in that case, it SHOULD reproduce because those would make great working cats.
if your stance is that it was totally avoidable, then fine, that is how you see things. i feel like we have more control over things. i've been dealing with potentially deadly animals for years and if one of those get out, trust me, they'd call me irresponsible.
and the fact that she's giddy about the young cat's pregnancy tells me that maybe she wasn't totally concerned with it staying a virgin feline. when a 14 year old gets knocked up, most don't WANT that but it "just happens".
my standards for responsibility are different. as that societal standard falls, so does society.
