I know, I know we messed up. She's only 8 months old and we didn't think she could have kids. my roommate thought she'd hold out and get it spayed for free by my dad.
Good news is the vet only counted 3 and we already have friends who are taking them so we get to see them all the time
and about the kitty abortions, My dad did one back in the day and one of the kittens had 2 heads. Its in a jar at the animal hospital--- CRAZY

Just my .02....
You know, it does take two. There was a "fully intact" male cat waiting for her. That's what irks me about people who have outside male cats. I suppose that since it's not their kitty coming home with kittens....
It was an accident, plain and simple. These things happen (cats can be sneaky!) and there usually isn't a problem finding homes for the cute little ones.
ETA: We were posting at the same time LOL! I'm glad that the babies already have homes It's a plus that you'll be able to see them grow too!

and no offense to you or your competence is intended, i have kids and pets and i'll admit that an off day is all it takes for things to happen. i rehab injured wildlife too and that poses even more of a risk of "something happening". no one can be at 100% all the time. i shoot for 75%
without someone playing devil's advocate, it just looks "ok" to let domestics reproduce at will and there is no debate about that being responsible or not.
i hope everything goes great for you and them, i really do.

I have compassion for you because this once happened to my cat too. I did not know about kitty abortions at the time, but many years later a shelter manager bashed me for not doing it. I left the shelter in tears and it was years before I went back as a volunteer, because of that bashing. I see firsthand the results of not spaying and neutering pets. That being said, I don't think in retrospect I could have gotten my cat spayed while she was pregnant. We found good homes for the kittens, and we know they all got spayed and neutered. Next best thing. The vet also insisted we wait until after her first heat. I don't know why but I guess a lot of vets felt this way at that time.

vets are animal doctors and doctors must worry about liability, which is sad because it hinders what they do. like what was mentioned above, the risk is minimal if you spay before that first heat, but if there is any risk, then they are risking a lawsuit in the most litigious country ever to populate earth.
thing is, it's like mice. 2 mice can become thousands in a couple of months. sure cats don't breed as quickly, but time isn't the issue, just the sheer numbers of homeless cats (70,000,000 is a lot of "wild" domesticated cats).
we're reactionary and will react too late, as usual. cats are already impacting wildlife from top to bottom. they're great hunters and can adapt to anywhere.
