Sorry Heidi.... I think it is good you are talking about your experiences with Cleo... It's good therapy.
I wish you were closer so my Chloe could run circles around Summer.

Lets not forget about the Shepard. A very good breed and will protect and love your family to the end. My shepard wont hurt anyone that doesnt hurt me or her kids. As long as noone does anything for her to not trust them she is good.

The Doberman is a great all around sloth/watchdog. They need to be properly "socialized" in order to be able to tolerate your friends, but they are still very wary by nature of strangers. My female "Abbie" would always "hawkeye" anyone new in the house and wait for any sign of trouble. She was a really loving spoiled brat and very well behaved. As for being around kids she was cool with my niece who was around 5 at the time. Though she hated my friend Nick because he talked so loud and she saw that as a possible threat. They are really smart animals who need both physical and mental exercise daily.
As any owner of this breed will tell you you become very attatched to them. One would think being such a security purpose dog they are not very loving, but they are of their owners and family. And they will down right break your heart when they pass on.
And if you are looking at getting one I would highly suggest talking to Barrie Hoytt at House of Hoytt: Dobermans as they have the best animals for any need you may have be it from couch riding pet to full out personal security companion.
And the problems you have with Rott's and shep's is the shep's shed like mad and the rott's have that slobber over everything deal going on. Plus a Dobie is so much more agile and graceful than the above breeds.
