Animal Abuser seeking pets in Atlanta
This relates to dogs and cats, but it is important to get the word out about this guy.
----------------------------------------------------------
Columbus, OH (US)
Date: Feb 6, 1999
Disposition: Convicted
Abuser/Suspect: Shon M. Rahrig
Case ID: 352
Classification: Mutilation/Torture, Beating
Animal: cat
Shon adopted a cat from Citizens for Humane Action (C.H.A.) on January 26, 1999. In the
early morning hours of February 6, Shon beat the cat, poked out its eye, broke its jaw legs,
and left it bloody and in agony in a laundry basket in his apartment. He asked Melissa to come
over and get it and take it to Delaware County Humane Society and tell them she found it along
the road. She instead took it to Columbus Veterinary Emergency Service (CVES) who humanely
euthanized it due to the extensive nature of its injuries.
Shon Rahrig, about 30 years old, of Sandbury Blvd, allegedly adopted 6 or 7 cats and a puppy
from various local shelters and allegedly abused them horribly, broke their limbs, put their eyes
out, etc. The alleged abuse became known when his girlfriend took one of the victims to a vet
to be euthanized. In court he "copped a plea" to avoid the nasty publicity of a jury trial, and
confessed to torturing one black and white cat, Misty, adopted from Citizens for Humane Action.
Under the current statutes the most severe penalty for this man, if convicted, would be 90 days
in jail and/or a fine of $750.
Melissa contacted C.H.A. and advised them what had happened. C.H.A. transported the body
from CVES to Capital Area Humane Society and filed an abuse report. Shon was subsequently
arraigned and charged with one count of animal abuse. Shon at first plead not guilty, but changed
his plea to guilty. On September 29,1999, Judge Pfeiffer sentenced Shon to 90 days in jail (of which
45 were suspended), 5 years probation, mandatory counseling and he was forbidden from owning
any living thing during the 5 year probation period. He began serving his sentence on November 1.
Case Updates
In Sept. 2002, Rahrig moved into 23560 Walden Center Dr, Apt 103, Bonita Springs FL. In October
2002, Animal Control Officers paid him a "welcome to the neighborhood visit" letting him know
they were aware of the Ohio case. Late Nov/early Dec 2002, Rahrig moved out of the apartment
leaving all of his furniture and personal belongs in it. The manager of the complex said he moved
to California but did not know the city. On January 24, 2006, Animal Control Officers confirmed
this information with a visit to the place he last lived and spoke with the managers.
Source: Lee County Animal Services
Update posted on Jan 24, 2006 - 12:06PM
It has been confirmed that Shon has relocated to the Fort Myers, Florida area. Local shelters are
encouraged to spread the word.
Reported to have moved to Long Beach, CA area where he was spotted at an adoption event.
Subject: SHON RAHRIG at it again - this time in ATLANTA, GEORGIA
We were contacted by Shon Rahrig (or at least that was the return e-mail name and
signed "Shon" at the bottom of the e-mail) to see about adopting some of our puppies.
Of course, because of the internet, we immediately recognized the name. He contacted
us via one of our animals' postings on Atlanta's Craigslist, and, apparently didn't read
where we perform EXTENSIVE checks including criminal background checks for Pit Bull puppies.

Great...the animals are bad enough...but people like him tend to eventually move on to people, if he hasn't already. Scarey stuff. This could be the next Jeffery Dahmer or Ted Bundy.

This guy needs some severe help! Id be more than willing to give him some backwoods justice (right now everyone is hearing the theme song for Deliverance..."Dueling Banjoes"..but that isnt what I was thinking..LOL)
I was thinking the same thing, Brett, if he hasnt hurt people yet, he will...probably kids...relatively defenseless like the animals he tortures.
Just looking at his face is making me physically ill..
This guy is already a serial killer in my opinion..
I hope someone finds this sick son of a ...gun and doses him a bit of his own medicine, or he gets a really strict judge to order him into a mental ward.
I cant believe with the first case the judge didnt order some form of counselling knowing animal cruelty/torture is a precursor to other crimes.
I think that should be mandatory for animal cruelty and neglect.
Glad you posted that..

He needs to have his limbs broken, his eyes poked out, beaten bloody and left in a laundry basket somewhere.........people that do things like this to anything or anyone, are the lowest, IMO, and deserve NO mercy..........something needs to be done to make the laws stronger for crimes like this ................

Yeah I agree,
Thats just sick..
I mean, neglecting your animal is a direct result of just not giving a flying flip about it, or being too lazy or ignorant to care for it..
Thats not specific torture..just done to be mean..Well in some cases it is..But this is deranged..I could think of worse things to do to him. People like this bring out a very UNPRETTY side to me..

that is terrible, like Julius stated, the next step is humans. The courts really need to raise the penalties such as actual jail time to stop these sick SOBs.

One of the problems is that there are no distinctions between levels of animal cruelty. Keeping a dog on a short chain is considered cruelty and carries the same penalty as skinning a kitten alive and dropping it in bleach.

I agree so it wouldnt be right to lock someone up for a short chain, however with this guy, they should toss him in the deepest darkest pit..after they skin him and dip HIM in bleach LOL

I just don't get what could drive you to that i'll admit when i was young (like 6) my cat scratched me and i wacked him real hard but now i think not much a 6yr old can do but i still can remember myself doing it and still wish i could take it back even though he died 8years ago but i could NEVER deliberately cause suffering in ANY way to an animal and if i thought i was even if i loved them i'd rather rehome them so they can get the love they deserve as no animal should be treated like that which is still why i feel drugs testing could be better used on the sick twisted nutjobs in prison or on death row that have killed, raped, tortured etc etc instead of harming innocent animals which we aren't really that genetically close to but that's slightly OT. I think people like that deserve to be locked up and have the key lost or poke their eyes out and break their bones and leave them for a while - see how much they enjoy it. As said though animal torture is usually one of the 1st things psychopaths do before getting to people.
We live in a sad, cruel and twisted world sometimes.

This is horrible BW. Unbelievable that somebody would use an animal for that. And JS has a point, this guy is not going to be happy with animals forever. He will move to people, maybe sooner if her can't get ahold of animals.
The above statement is sad because if it were humans he would be more severely punished and probably tried for murder or attempted.

Assuming Melissa is/was his g/f, I'm glad she had the stuff it takes to turn him in instead of being fearful herself. At the vet's office I worked at, we saw this one woman's cats whose husband would take it out on them when he was mad. Unfortunately, our animal cruelty laws are lax here in KY and the veterinarian turning it in doesn't hold much credence even (trust me, we tried it with fighting dogs).
It really is sad, I believe Dahmer and Bundy (not to mention others) both had a history of animal abuse before "moving on." Sick stuff.

I dont think he had abused her yet. I think she would have been too scared of him in that case. I think he is too scared to move up to people just yet, but I think he is getting braver with filling out adoption applications knowing the Shelter could find out the info on him, if they wanted to.
Think about all the ads in the paper for free cats and dogs to good homes..How come he doesnt go that route??
If I had a history of crimes against animals, I wouldnt want to leave my name and address on an application to adopt one.. I think that is sort of an example of him getting braver and thumbing his nose at the law..
I think this man is EXCEPTIONALLY calculating as well as psychotic and knows NOT to mess with people or he could get in trouble. With animals he can pretty much get away with it and hide it much easier.
NOW when (and I say when) he comes down on people it will be because he feels he is "smarter than" the cops and can get away with it..It will be an opportunitistic thing: A kid who wandered from mom and dad in a crowded area... An indigent small woman, probably disabled in some way (by chemical, mental, or physical means) Someone he knows wont be missed. Someone younger and less physically powerful than him.
Usually with these kinds of people it is a an obsession and they find peace in what they do..CREEPY I know, but I read a lot about this kind of thing. I wanted to be a detective for a long time.
The really SAD thing, this man is one in a million who do these same things to animals every day...The only difference is with this man, we have a name and face.
