How about: Permit systems for large constrictors? Helpful or hindrance?

Permit system for hots: how many hours of supervision, how many hours of education, graduated steps like copperheads before mambas, grandfathering, who oversees permits, permit fees (what's reasonable?), should the hot owners establish a foundation or agency to assist the government in overseeing permit guidelines, should the herp society be allowed total control with only minimal involvement from the government, and there's probably a few others to go along with that, but that's the basics of what I'd envision in a permitting system thread. I'll jump in the large constrictors, but I'd really like to see how the hot community would react and what people would be willing to do.
I have some others mulling around, I'll post those later.

IF, and big IF, we can get BW in here (where's he been), I'd love to see discussion, perhaps it wouldn't be so much of a debate, but I'm sure someone would disagree on:
Venom toxicity as an aid in digestion. Does the type of venom matter? Does the potency matter? How much research has been done? Which species appear to benefit more from venom? Are there any that show no digestive benefit?
Maybe it's more of my curious mind than a topic for debate.

Re: Debate Suggestions?
Can we debate whether or not reptiles have feelings, and/or social needs, and to what degree, and which species?

Hrmm, it could be a good idea. Would you mind starting your own thread on this? Keep in mind it will be moderated. Also, look at the other starting threads in the debate section and use them as a template please.

Re: Debate Suggestions?
Due to the heated discussion regarding the Virginia PolyTechnic University shootings on Monday I suggest a debate thread regarding gun ownership.
Just a few ideas for the thread:
1. Should we be allowed to own guns?
2. Should certain guns/ammunition not be allowed to be owned?
3. What SHOULD the laws say?

Re: Debate Suggestions?
What about, 'Should endangered reptiles be sold in the pet trade?' I recall reading in a snake guide book that many species of boas are endangered. (Might be outdated though... LOL)
- Should we require permits for endangered snakes?
- Who should be allowed to sell them? Any pet store? Registered breeders?
- Would taking endangered reptiles as pets disrupt the ecosystem?
Just thought it might be interesting...

Re: Debate Suggestions?
Climate Change..
.
Is it real?
.
What aspect of the current data convinces you most that climate change is real and a threat (or seems most implausible)?
.
Are humans involved? (to what degree).
.
Do you care? (Why or Why not).
.
Assuming that this is real and a threat would you make any changes or sacrifices to abate climate change? Such as?
.
Gus.

Should we sell endangered reptiles in the pet trade is a good debate topic, I just wanted to add, there are permits, and restrictions on who can breed and sell. Animals listed as CITES are on the "endangered species list" its basically the same thing. Certain species dont require a permit to keep, breed or sell, however, they do need a permit to cross state lines. Aldabra tortoises are one example. You can look up the CITES status [I or II] on any number of sites found through google.
hope this helps.

While I agree this would be a good debate topic, I think the criteria should be its real status (IUCN Red List) rather than the CITES Appendices. The example given, Aldabra Tortoises ( Geochelone gigantea) is listed under CITES Appendix II, along with every other species of tortoise that is not under CITES Appendix I. Its actual status is Vulnerable- one level below Endangered. It has no status under the US ESA (Endangered Species Act).
A better example is the Burmese Star Tortoise ( Geochelone platynota), which is Critically Endangered (considered functionally Extinct in the Wild by many experts, but is data deficient). This species is only under CITES Appendix II protection (just like any other tortoise) and does not even receive protection under the US ESA (Endangered Species Act), even though it is the second most endangered Geochelone sp.. This species is in dire need of protection, but a 10 year kid, who has only ever had a goldfish, can own one of these.
Cheers,
Michael

Re: Debate Suggestions?
I suggest/started a thread a week ago that dealt with the morality of using herps for monetary gain (not breeders more of sideshow people) and while waiting for approval I got this reply:
Closing until we get this put into the proper debate format
Is there something I am suppose to do to get it into proper debate format or is this more of a rejection letter?
