Hello!
Just saw a dead specimen of a mangrove snake at a local zoo where they were going to feed it to their King Cobras. Only thing was that it had white bands instead of the usual yellow ones. I'm 100% sure that it's a mangrove snake, cos I could compare it with a normal specimen in the zoo.
Has anyone seen another snake similiar to it? Are such mutations common?
Thanx

I've seen white banded mangroves many times. Theres an 'in between' coloration too, that is sort of a cream color. From what I'm told, its not particularily rare... but since mangroves are so infrequently bred in captivity, and the collection areas are few and far between that no one really has spent much time looking at their variation.

Very pretty eh
They aren't colubrids though. They are boiga dendrophila, rear fanged and venomous. The venom isn't "NORMALLY" life threatening to humans but.... ya don't really want to let them gnaw on you.

Really? What are they then? Boa? Pythons?

There are actually quite a few mangrove varieties, sort of "locality mangroves" that vary in band count, band color, baby color (likemost boiga the baby are different looking from the adults). They even come in an a solid blue-black form (sulawesi mangroves). Unfortunately, like somebody said, there not bred enough for hte forms to be really well defined and often they're imported without much in the way of locality data.
They are a colubrid, and while venomous typically not fatal for an adult, though as with most venoms some individuals may be more sensitive to others and it isn't to say it may not be painful!
Too bad there aren't many CB mangroves around... I'm dying to have a pair I've had to substitute with my boiga cyanea

Cyanea???
Please tell me its a MALE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hehehe
If you dont mind me asking.....where did you get her/him?
I, like everyone else ive talked to in the U.S., own a female(used to be 2 females, but sold one)
and dont know but one person here in the b.a. who owns any, period.
I am kicking myself VERY hard now, because last june at the sf herp show,,,Bill Gillingham had a lone male and a few females... and I only got the female!..ugh..... and have now learned that his breeder female ate the male...
SOOOOOOOOOOOOO....there are no cyanea babies this year
And the only place I have ever seen them for sale is over seas...PLENTY of males over there, ofcourse!
My girl isnt even close to breeding size..so hopefully by the time she is..ill have found someone with a male to sell me..or someone who wants to pair their male up with Mayori(after shes had a nice fat meal, that is..lol)
Do you keep any other Boiga?
and have you seen that AWESOME B. pulverulenta at the ebv??
I would love to buy that little girl, but cant afford her right now
I do have a very looooong melanistic cynodon waiting for me at the viv though..and shes very cool...so I guess im happy....for now...hehhe
Do you ever go out to Lodi,to the serpentarium?..
Bill has a great shop...with alot of beautiful animals on display, including yellow bellied mangroves, his sulawesis and ofcourse the melanota...I also believe he had a white bander while i was last there..
All i want to know is... where are the babies at bill?...hehehe
Im still waiting for him to sell me a male sulawesi,darnit...

If anyone is into Mangroves..he is definitely the guy to talk to,and if ever in Lodi(lol)...one MUST visit his facility...make sure you go when hes actually there btw...much more worth the trip
Didnt mean to get off the subject of white banded mangroves...but I saw cyanea and got all giddy..
VERY nice to see other Boiga enthusiasts here...and so close to me too!
Nice informative post Cascabel

Oh I know its horrid.... EVERYBODY has a female cyanea! I bought mine from Bill at a local show about 2 years ago... didn't plan too but I love rearfangs (I keep hognoses and am currently coveting a false water cobra) and saw that cute little red and green baby and realized I was quite broke yet . . .
Maybe we should put out some personal ad "Legions of sleek, single supermodel boiga cyanea chics seek big papa... don't worry we're well fed "
I'm also looking for a male without much success. I heard about Bill's male and it's absolutely tragic. I inquired about a male shortly after I bought mine but figured that as a starving student I should wait! At one point glades herp had some import adults... but I dont' know anyone else in the US with Captive Bred guys.
I haven't been up to Lodi but maybe some day when I'm in a road trippin' mood and have a little extra cash to play with... I have a red hognose and a cape gopher I bought from Bill and I've seen other animals from his place and they're all good looking.
as for the Boiga at EBV... she's a cutie but I'm still holding out for CB classic black and yellow mangroves I'm tempted by that adorable Aheatulla prasina they have, but it's way overpriced
Now I don't feel quite so lonely There isn't nearly enough attention on Boiga among the herpers i know (they always look at me strange when they ask about my animals and I mention "boiga cyanea"
