man does he let off a nasty stink. Must be a defense smell..,,,funny, it bit like 4 guys but hasn't bitten me yet. is it gonna be hard to get him to eat mice??? We're really abundant in lizards here.....guessing that was his main diet.

What are you going to be hunting for? I guess I can wish you good luck anyways.... Good luck!
That kingsnake I found in the road yesterday also kind of smells.... I did give him bath-- he was pretty dirty, and that helped some. Guess he just needs to get settled in, and used to us?

Is it an eastern king? Does it have the really narrow bands? Got a pic?
Well, capt, he IS a ratsnake, probably would prefer a tasty, stick to your ribs rodent that takes a little longer to digest than a lizard...
either that, or you could scent the first few mice with lizards to help him get started...

Well, I'm not really sure... I just looked at some pictures, and he kinda looked like this banded california king that I saw. What's the difference? He is black w/ thin yellow bands... very tame, too.

I know in North Carolina, that is basically the only species of Kingsnake, and it's found throughout NC, so I imagine (without checking the field guide) that it's range extends into VA. Eastern Kings are sometimes called "chain" kings b/c often their bands are much narrower than a Cali king. The thickness of the bands is about the only difference, excluding of course, that they are found on opposite coasts. Some have fairly thick bands and are difficult to differentiate from a Cali King, while some have really thin bands.
I'm looking forward to seeing the pics!

Hey capt. I have been keeping ratnsnakes pretty much my entire life. Mostly wild caught. I have yet to have one be a problem feeder other than early spring when they are more interested in sex and even that is usually shortlived. Even the greyrat that I caught last summer that was run over by a car and has broken ribs ate the first meal I ever offered him and it was a frozen/thawed mouse. Also...unfortunalty, yellow rats are muskers...always were and always will be. They chill out to some degree with alot of handling but they startle easy and even really tame ones often musk a little when you first go to pick them up. But...a little antibacterial soap and water cleans it right off and at least after the bath you can enjoy some scent free handling for awhile.

Well, after looking at a bunch of other pictures, I am guessing that the kingsnake I found is an eastern... Some of the pictures I found were different, (like the bands were not as bright of yellow, or looked like they went completely around) but this snake does have those chains (as is in the name!) Cool 'nuff.... I think I shall let him go next week in the woods by the barn where I keep my horse. Same area, just farther from the road. Thanks for your help, Mr. Riley!

ok, finally I got those pics of the yellow rat that I caught. He's let me handle him without a strike as of yet. Maybe there easy to tame too, I don't know. But anywho, here they are.....

he ate 4 mice in one feed....I went back there to where he was caught and couldn't believe the rodent and skink population out there. I'm going to look for some more this morning.

You should see the yellow rats in east central florida. Particularly those that exist on the barrier islnds in brevard and seminole counties. Huge , clean yellow bands with thin black stripes.
Peace,
ALex

ARE YOU GUYS SURE YOU DON'T WANT TO HAVE THAT TRIP HERE??!! HERE'S ANOTHER ADDITION THAT I CAUGHT YESTERDAY. IT'S A BLACK RACER. PRETTIEST COLUBRID I'VE EVER SEEN. IT'S SCALES ARE SO SOFT AND HAVE A GREAT HUE. I thought it might have been an indigo but with J_Riley and Eddie's help I figured it out. HAPPY HERPING!!

Too late to change it now! But that doesn't mean we cannot plan another one down to your neck of the woods later on! Sure looks like the hunting is good...
