*note, no pic yet but I'll try and get one once I get it home*
Funniest thing happened at the workplace today...
Cleaning in the backroom before we open when suddenly I hear someone calling my name. I walk into the fish isle and there is one of our female workers dangling a snake by the tail from her hand while trying to avoid being bitten. Before I can even see it, she drops it and another female goes to pick it up...bam! she gets nailed pretty good (small snake so it probably didn't even penetrate the skin) but she finally grabs it behind the head. All this happened in the amount of time it took me to walk from the doorway to where they were *about 10 feet*. So this seccond worker wants me to hold what I can now see is a baby *I think oakatee (sp)* cornsnake. As she is passing this thing to me she's like, "make sure you got its head." So of course I ignore her and just let it sit on my hand. Of course that helps calm it down a little since it isn't being restricted anymore, but its still wary.
So ok, as I'm holding this thing, my first thought was, "Oh the cornsnake got out," but then I remembered the only corn we had was albino, and our manager didn't bring in any other snakes the day before that I knew of. So I think back and realize in the 5 months or so I've been working there, I don't remember us Ever having a 'regular' cornsnake of that size. (we had a full grown female but no babies). So I asked if anyone remembers this thing but nobody really pays attention to the reptiles anyways. So this thing has been loose in the store for at least a few months. Weirder yet, its healthy looking, its not skiny, doesn't have old shed stuck on it or anything. Sadly it looks healthier than some of the snakes that we had been selling before I started taking over the reptile area. We think its been feeding on the colony of loose crickets around the store, would a corn eat insects? I don't know what else it could be eating.
Well to get to the point of this post, I got a good look at it later, and its actually a really pretty corn in my oppinion so I decided to break my 'boa and python only' vow and said "Since we didn't know we had this anyways, why don't I just take it home?" They didn't like that too much but did decide that if I really wanted it they would charge me 25 bucks due to the fact we didn't know we had it anyway. So I got a ~15 inch, pretty corn that would probably go for around 60 bucks in the store for 25, yay! lol.
Someone already named it for me today too...Aztec due to its patterning. (one of the girls said it looked kinda like aztec art so she said to name it that.) I don't know its sex yet, but it sure is touchy! I fed all the snakes today, and decided to feed this just to make sure it would take f/t. The mouse is just barely in the cage when, Wham Aztec nails it. I go to put the cover on the critter carrier (what I feed the snakes in) and as soon as the lid moves near the cage, Ptooey! The snake spits it out. (only had the head in its mouth) So I grumble, put the lid on and open the little flap to pick up the mouse (with pliers) and try again. This time, mouse is halfway down when someone tries to cover the critter cage with a towel, again, Ptooey! Third try, again about halfway down when someone walks through the back room quickly, and again, Ptooey. Finally I tell everyone to stop moving around and waited until the bulge was a good 2 inches down the body before we started moving around again. Sheesh!
Oh yeah, after it ate it got very defensive, striking at the air in the general direction of people even when it was in the critter cage. Its kinda weird, but I like it at the same time.
*whew* well know that I've babbled for a while, I take it home tomorrow night.
