They don't get very big at all, maybe 12-18inches. I've read some people do keep them as pets, but they can be difficult as they tend to feed on really small insects like termites, small worms, etc. which can make it difficult to make sure they're eating well. They tend to stay buried/hidden so they aren't very entertaining.
We just turned the one we found loose in a nearby wooded park with nice rotted logs.
