I recently obtained a baby greybanded kingsnake. it's appox 6 monthes old, it's name is fridge (long story) this is my first colubrid, up until now I've only kept boids. it's eating pinkys now, here's my question, I just saw on another site a recomendation to feed baby colubrids every 5 days. is this normal, I've been feeding once a week and fridge never seems as though it's in feeding mode until I put it in its lunchbox. also when is a good size to probe? I was thinking a foot at least? -Juggalo

Hello,
I have fed culobrids both on a 5 day or a 7 day schedule. I just kind of go with the individual snake. Two of my corn snakes were so very small when I go them, I have to feed them the itty bitty pinkies. I fed them on a 5 day schedule until they were able to handle slightly larger pinkies. I don't know if it helped them at all, but I get nervous around little tiny baby snakes so I want to get some size on them quickly. They are both doing very well now.
As far as probing, if the snake is less than 18 inches long, you may be able to get someone to pop him/her to determine gender. Over 18 inches and popping my not be accurate anymore. As far as probing, you got me. I went and bought a set of probes, but i am afraid to use them.
I, for one, love long stories. Just how did Fridge get his name?
Enjoy your baby, they aren't babies for long!

Usually with baby colubrids I feed them a mouse pinky twice a week. Ive noticed with some of the ones I kept in the past that when I fed them only 1 pinky a week there growth was pretty slow. I have a corn snake that is 8 months old and he eats one rat pinky a week.

Thanks! I'll try 5 days, I wish this one would stay a baby, how cute! I guess the name isn't really a long story, just more info than that post needed. my best friend mikey (but everyone calls him sickkid because he has annemia, diabetes, epilepsy, the list goes on., and on) is a very different individual, he's fresh, brilliant tattoo artist, exelent musician, he's a really high quality person. I got my snake, and had no idea what to name it, so I just asked him to say the first thing that popped into his head for a name for my new snake. he just looked up into the air and sayed fridge. WHAT!?!? why fridge? he sayed it was because he was thirsty, and thinking about his FAYGO rootbeer sodapop that was in the fridge. so that what stuck . Thanks again for the input.
