Just bored and thought I'd post a pic of some of my more recent colubrid additions. I get so bored with corn snakes, king snakes, milk snakes and rat snakes... I just have to go a little further out of my way to find things that interest me. A cookie to anyone who can name all three species.

Too Easy, Rav!
The first is a Night Snake. The sceond is a baby Coahwhip (probably only a few weeks old). And the third is a Fox Snake.

Rav, what species of fox snake is that?
Also, I need your thoughts regarding two retail stores here in Austin- Herpeton and Zookeeper Exotics.
Thanks,
Ken

Elaphe vulpina... Western Fox Snake.
And Herpeton is a group of kiddies who think they can run an exotic store. Their employees are clueless, and their managers/owners are money grubbing jerks. They'll sell anything to anyone if they think they can make a buck and their animals are frequently ill and their snakes are almost always covered in mites. I would estimate a good 90% of my rescues come directly from their stores - from people either told the wrong information on an animal, or giving it up because they are unable to care for an unhealthy animal. They even sell venomous out the back door to anyone with the interest to inquire. I used to go to their north store for my feeders until they let their store pet, a malaysian water monitor, die - instead of getting it a 50 dollar vet visit and antibiotic shots. I have had many people in the area ask me about their practices, and I always point them to City Animal Control - and as usual, AC shrugs them off. They don't want to make the effort of cleaning them up.
Zookeeper has some knowledgable employees (well, most of them), and are a much cleaner operation, but much smaller time. The owner... well he's a money hound. He doesn't know much about animals at all, but he'll gladly buy anything that he thinks he can resell for a good profit, his latest kick is a mongoose species. Last week it was ring-tailed lemurs. Last I heard he was breeding caimen - real wonderful addition to the pet market. Their store pet is a two-toed sloth, which doesn't exactly look very happy in a big display case... but at least it eats well. The animals in Zookeeper aren't full of mites, and if they do get something in that is sick - I have seen them take unwell animals for treatment, and they keep PaM always on hand. I have even seen them rescue out animals that need special treatment, and are unsellable. They are the only place I go to any more... I can't stand going into any of the Herpeton stores anymore. I pop in every now and then in hopes they've changed, but they never do.
Btw... when did you get to Austin?

I've been in Austin for about four days, visiting my significant other, since Monday was her birthday.
I definitely share your view of Herpeton. The last time I was in town, I wandered in there to check them out. Quite to my surprise, they had N.A. wood turtles at a very reasonable price. I was pretty keen on getting them until I noticed that one was no longer of this earth. Cementing my negative opinion of them was a little soundbyte from the news yesterday morning. It was something to the effect of iguanas being good pets for small children.
I haven't had a chance to make it to Zookeeper yet, and wanted to make sure they weren't anything like Herpeton before venturing in there.
As an aside, fox snakes have got to be one of my all-time favorites. They're highly underrated.

I -love- fox snakes, this guy I got was a rescue... and he's pulling through extremely well. I'm hoping to get more of them now that I've had this one.
Go into Zookeeper sometime in the late afternoon/evening and talk with Tim. I'm sure he'd love to hear about some of the stuff you keep. He does educational programs and such here in town, very knowledgable guy. If you drop by tomorrow evening around 7pmish, I'll probably be hanging around.
Yeah, I heard about that little radio soundbyte, I couldn't believe it... but like I said, if it makes them a buck, they don't give a flying f**k. They'd have gladly sold you that dead wood turtle if they thought they could have gotten away with it. Remember that old Monty Python sketch? "No, he's just sleeping."
