I saw this cute little Western Hognose the other day in the store and just had to have her. Three weeks later after I had done research on this species and had the tank set up, she came home.
She is a great eater, and fair tempered. Now she has never bitten me but I am useing minihooks with her. One reason is I want to treat her like a hot (she is technically but realistically, not really a danger). I want to learn good habits with a snake that will act (in some aspects) like an adder would. The second reason is she doesn't like to be startled. She doesn't hiss all the time but being a baby yet, I understand her posture. Everything is a threat. In her case she will hiss and do false striking if startled or bothered, but once out she doesn't mind being handled. She calms right down and is just fine.
I decided to go with a mainly course grain sand substrate. The upside to this is that it's like kitty litter when it's time to clean up. The downside is I am changing the water dish twice a day to keep her from drinking in any sand that may fall into the dish. I am seriously thinking of switching to cypress chips just like the rest of my snakes. Although the sand allows me to look at her and imagine she is a Sawscaled or sand viper, especially the way she will burrow herself into the sand and have only her eyes poking out.

She loves that tree too. Likes to curl up on top of it sometimes.

Isn't that just a cute face?

Her current home is a 10 Gallon reptile aquarium with locking screen top. Depending on her growth, she may be upgraded to shesha's 20L when shesha gets her 35L.
