heating ques?
ok so I have an undertank heater..I have a thermostat to regulate the heater but the thermostat doesnt give the actual temp reading it just has low..med..and high..so I have a digital probe thermometer which I put down under the mulch and on top of the pad...I get a reading of 84..I also put a sticky thermometer on the glass on the warm side halfway up the glass..that I get a reading of 75...does all this sound right???...when I go in to get him out he is usually never directly under where the pad is..just nearby..and the mulch doesnt feel hot just warm
thanks

As far as I know, the substrate takes longer to heat. The same thing with water and the ocean taking longer to warm up then the sand. All my heating pads have thermostats with High, Medium, Low aswell. I start them off on Low, and rarely even move to medium. High will just be way too hot on mine. Try using your hand to feel the tempatures that are coming off the pad, but I suggest trying it on low first.

I would let it stay on for 24 hours and re test the temps. If the TOP of the substrate is 84 degrees, then it is great, if not warm it up to the next setting and recheck it to make sure it does not get too hot. Unless you have a burrower, you want the top where they sit to be warmer.
Good luck to you.
