Anyone heard of this? I saw it at a pet store, it was brown and an eggshell color. Just never heard of it before. Let me know.

There is one I would call a chocolate King at the pet shop over here. It's a pretty brown color with yellow bands. Really pretty. I have never seen a picture of one, or heard of anyone calling them that, and I don't know how 'popular' they may be, but I think it's the same color you are describing because that's what I have been calling the one at the pet shop from the first time I saw it. It just seems to fit.

My very first snake was kinda like that. She was listed at the pet store as a desert phase, and was black and white as a baby, but as she grew up she faded into a brown and off-white color. She was a neat snake, I kinda regret selling her.

These chocolate snakes are known as Coastal phase California Kings, that is, if we're thinking of the same thing. I happen to have one, his bands aren't white or eggshell but more of a brighter yellow color. I've seen Coastals with white bands as well. So, I would think that there is color variation in those bands among Coastals. Just my .02.

Many people refer to the coastal phase as "chocolate". In all reality though, chocolate is a morph unto itself. Chocolate cal kings are brown from head to tail, and are one of the ingredients, along with albino, to produce true snow cal kings.
These are not to be confused with Baja cal kings, which have a natural tendancy towards melanism.

The description of the snake in question leads me to believe that it is actually a coastal phase cal king, and not a true chocolate. Chocolate cal kings are generally uniformly brown from head to tail, with some showing a very faint dorsal stripe.
While breeding this snake wouldn't result in any snows, it would probably lead to some rather attractive albinos.

Well, I'll have to go down there and take another look at the collection. I would get some pics but the camera is being used this weekend. What do you have to cross to produce the lavendar phase rather than straight albino? I like the looks of the lavender phase. They look like a softer color. Not trying to sound.....crooked or anything but they look cool. I want to explore with kings as far as morphs like people do with corns. I think the possibilites are endless. Like a greyband and an albino. Imagine getting white and that bright red?? Just some thoughts....

The lavender phase cal king is a phase unto itself (tyrosinase positive albino). To produce lavenderss, you will need either a pair of lavenders or hets.
As for the "albino greyband", it has been done. Someone a few years ago bred alterna with albino ruthveni, then bred the hets back to each other. What I find most disturbing about this is that some of the offspring were offered for sale as being greybands.

Hey Naja, where did you learn all of this?? I know not in the USAF! If so I'm in the wrong branch! Did you know the army has a base somewhere where they breed rattlers for antivenom?? Saw it on the croc hunter once.
Anywho, I wouldn't sell them as greyband's. I'm not even that far yet. I'm going to attempt to breed my 2 albino's first. Me and Natas are going to come up with a raffling system for the site. I'll probably sell some of them locally. I have some pet stores interested. Either sale or trade. But anywho, I get really into the thoughts of patterns. I'll admit, I love most natural patterns over morphs, but the thoughts of having a unique snake pattern intrigues me. Is there a place where I can check all this stuff out? Not for boas but for kings. Thanx Naja.
