I haven't seen that snake since, but a friend of mine described the same snake, lurking in HER kennel. Her son said it was a rat snake, but very unusual coloring, so he took it home with him, and set it lose on his property, which is about 5-6 miles (of backyard woods) from me.
My friend said this snake was 4 foot long (I said about 3) very calm, just like the one I saw (who crawled 3 feet in front of me, calmly).
Looking on the "Snakes of PA" page, the rat snake is black...can they come in colors?
Also, what's the possibility of this snake traveling 5-6 miles through woods, or maybe there are more unusual colored rat snakes in this area? Just curious.
Although I'm still being very cautious, my mind is eased some...a rat snake is welcome in my kennel anyday.

Yeah, there are different colors in ratsnakes. As a matter of fact, there is a wild caught albino black rat snake at the local nature museum.

Here's a pic of that one.
