Amazing animals. They can eat 4 rats and crap out 10. I never could figure that one out lol. They are somewhat aggressive when you reach into the cage because they are extremely territorial about their space. They are fast and flighty but once you get them out, they tend to anchor to you and chill out. Beware though...They can tie their very long prehensile tail into multiple knots. I had to walk next door once and get a neighbor to help untie one from around my neck. I was stuck. They are very similar to indigos except a wee bit more flighty. When they get defensive, they blow their neck up like a football shaped cobra hood. Their strikes are sometimes bluff strikes...except when you are bothering them in their cage. They will nail you there. They need a lot of space and branches to climb on. They can get over 11 feet. They seem to do better on multiple small prey items rather than one large rat at a time. In the wild, the are notorious nest raiders so they are geared for eating piles of small birds and rodents. They swallow faster than any reptile you will have ever watched eat too. Chomp chomp gone...chomp chomp gone...chomp chomp gone...as fast as you can keep handing them to him...freaky snakes. Not a good beginner reptile but with some patience, tollerance for occasional bleeding etc, they make great captives...by far one of my favorite colubrids.

One other thing, if you get one and it has a raised spine, triangular shaped body, don't try to fatten him up. That's the way they are supposed to be. They aren't round bodied at all.

What size cage would they need and also, what about beauty snakes. Any experience and a good care sheet would be appreciated. I want a large coulbrid but don't know what one people like just yet. Like said in another thread I an planning on 4' by 3' by 3' high cage and I wanted to get a nice snake to put in there. Don't know weather I want a carpet python, a green tree python, a tiger rat snake(probably to large for that cage, a beauty rat snake, or maybe others.....Opinions appreciated!!!
Thanks
Jake

Adult tiger rats need a lot of space. A LOT of space. Lot's of height too. Morti got his breeder male from me. That's the one I had to go get a neighbor to untie from my neck lol. When I decided to take on the emeralds and especially the pied amazon project, I had to make some decisions about getting rid of some animals to make some space because I will have to keep all offspring from the first few generations. Most of my colubrids had to go. I have one albino bullsnake now...that's the only colubrid I have left.
