Um, just as a suggestion, i wouldnt feed him tonight. He just got into a new environment, and must be pretty stressed out. Give him a few days to get settled in, and then try and feed him.

Never heard of a King of that coloration being referred to as a Desert King. Only as a black/white banded Cali King. Someone care to second that, or to educate me....?

Here's a pic. Sumi is a Cali Kingsnake. We first fed him a few days after bringing him home and other than when he's getting ready to shed he gobbles it up everytime. Enjoy yours!!

When I got mine (10 years ago) the black and whites were called desert phase cal kings, as opposed to the yellow/brown banana phase. Not sure if the terminology had changed in the last 10 years, though.

Actually the desert phase Cal kings we're originally collected out of Clark County, Nevada (i.e., Las Vegas). I found one in Henderson, NV a few years ago that was absolute black and white, and very tight bands. There is another form of kingsnake called the desert king, but comes from southeastern Arizona on over to Texas...and very different pattern. Love the kingsnakes though...my favorites of the colubrids. Even my current collection of snakes has a token representation (4) of gray-bands.

I wonder about it too, though he was sold as a Desert Banded Calif Kingsnake to be exact, though I do know where you are coming from. Here are some links to others of the same breed.
http://home.att.net/~ssilv-ht/temp/L-banded04.htm and another

Some people have told me he looks like a 50/50 High White Banded Calif Kingsnakes like these: http://home.att.net/~ssilv-ht/temp/L_HWScX_04.htm
