Hognose feeding
I just offered my new hog a crawler mouse. I noticed that it didn't go to try and constrict the prey, like the kingsnakes do. He seems to just bite it and hang on to the prey. I didn't realize that they seem to rely on their toxins to imobilize their prey.
i just found that interesting. Does everyone else's hognoses do that too, or does mine just realize its dead and doesn't try and constrict?

I'm not sure, but my 7 month old BCI has NEVER constricted its prey! It doesn't even bite it... just slithers over and swallows. Who knows what goes on in thier heads.

I don't believe they are even truley venomous. From what I understand (correct me if I'm wrong), it's actually special enzymes in the saliva that paralize frogs. Most people don't have a reaction to it at all, some are severe, but non-lethal none the less.

yeah they are not really venemous. But they are rear fanged or at least have enlarged teeth in the back of the mouth. possibly to puncture the frog, i dunno.

This is not a joke. It sounds dumb but it's true.
Several years ago, I was showing my collection to some interested people. I went to pick up one of my larger female hognoses and she just lunged and latched on to my finger. I didn't want to look stupid in front of "company" so I tried to act like it happened all the time. I tried to get her off by using alcohol, water (warm and cold), and eventually had to slide my driver's license between her teeth and my finger. This took all of about 10 minutes. I didn't even bleed that bad. After I had gotten done with the "show", (15 more minutes) my finger had started to swell up. I knew that they had rear fangs/"venom" so I decided to go to the hospital. Big mistake. After arguing with them that it was not an African viper, they finally just gave me some IV benedryl and sent me home 4 hours later. My arm swelled up to about 1/3 larger than normal, but after 4-5 days the swelling went down with no side effects. That was 4 years ago and she hasn't even tried to bite again.
