The local store by me has a really nice looking albino corn. Sorta looks like a reverse oketee. Anyway, it is fast, squirmy, hisses, and bites, and bites, and .....well you get the idea.
It is about 12 inches long and supposedly captive bred. They want $60 (kinda pricey) for it. I thought about getting it but wanted some advice.
Will I be able to tame it down? The bites are more of a shock. They don't break the skin. The saleperson didn't think it would ever be tame and tried to sell me an oketee instead. Is it true that I should skip the snake? With regular handling, won't it settle down? If I get it, how do I go about calming it?

I have no oppinion about that as I have always had snakes tame down with just enough handling except for the Psyco Kingsnake. But if I did get that corn, I'd try the dirty teeshirt trick first and handle the kiddo daily for 15 minutes a day. Even if he is in the middle of biting and hissing at you. Steve,
Where abouts in CT are you? I seem to recall seeing an albino corn at the Animal Hutch in East Windsor. Either that or I'm remembering the Albino at Dave's Soda in Springfield...but anyways, if you're in that neck of the woods, you may want to try there and see if you can find a more even tempered snake. They've got a good selection from babies to breeders of many types. I have to get feeders tomorrow night so I can check if you want that specific type of snake.

I'm at the other end of the state but a day trip might be in order. The one I saw was at Slither and Swim in West Haven. Really nice but it was like trying to pick up a milksnake (fast and all over the place but no crapping ) and it strikes fast.
Really nice but I don't know if I want to deal with it.

Ah, West Haven. My ex-college room-mate lived there. Nice town.
I'll check tomorrow night and let you know if my memory was failing me or not.

If the salesperson said they don't think it will ever be tame, try negotiating with the price. Maybe they'll knock down the price for ya. I'm sure the corn will tame down with some TLC! My corn was a vicious little neonate! Matter of fact, it's the only snake I have that ever tried ta bite me! Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

Steve, just got back from Animal Hutch. Went there during lunch. (I now have two baby rats in my front pocket for Ted's dinner when I get home. If the people in the office only knew) I guess I was wrong. The only corns that I saw there were a breeding pair, no albino. Which isn't to say that there wasn't one. Then again, I wouldn't put it past me to have a waking hallucination.
I suppose I should have asked. Sorry.

Hey Steve!
Listen, if you like the corn, negotiate a better price based on it's temper (remember, they know they would probably be glad to unload it, since with that attitude it might sit around there for a long time eating up their mice!) and get it.
Corns almost always settle down - I say almost only because i never say never, but i have NEVER seen a corn, wild caught or otherwise, that didnt tame down with time and handling.

Well, price is not negotiable so I'll pass. I should get a deal if I have to tame it down but oh well. I'm expecting a baby BCI Tuesday anyway.
