Welcome to the site, finally another snake lover from Utah! I'm not alone! As far as a beginner snake goes. What kind of size would you be looking for once it reaches full size. There are a few different snakes who are great for beginners. You just have to ask yourself a few questions. Do I want a snake that will sit still in my lap, or that will move around more when handled. Big bodied or skinny? How long...3 feet, 4 feet.....10 feet+ (not recommended for beginners) What is the largest cage you could for sure fit in future housing situations? Will you be able to monitor temperature and humidity well? Some snakes are more forgiving when you don't monitor as well whereas others would not do well with that at all and it would be torture for them.....
Let us know and I'm sure you'll get plenty of suggestions

hey thanks for the replies...ummm..i probably want a snake that's somewhere between 4-6 feet.. medium size or small..don't want large body. largest cage probably around 5 feet long, 3 ft. in depth or something close to that... i'm not so sure about monitering humidity, etc. i dont know how well i would keep a close watch on that stuff. thanks for the warm welcome though

If you don't want a big bodied snake then a colubrid of some sort would be best for you instead of a boid (pythons, boas..). There are lots of options in your size preference. The most common of which would probably by a Corn Snake or Kingsnake. Here are a few links to see the California Kingsnake I just got... http://redtailboa.net/index.php?name...wtopic&t=15640 and http://redtailboa.net/index.php?name...wtopic&t=15973
Also a member on here TONYHAWKINS just had a kingsnake drop some eggs not too long ago and they have potential to be gorgeous. Check out his post here... http://redtailboa.net/index.php?name...wtopic&t=15542 He said they should be ready around June and will be asking $30 plus shipping (shipping is usually about $35). Kings get to be about 5 feet in length and not as big around as your arm.

welcome to the site! if you want a good beginner snake that is not gonna get long (or bulky), a corn snake would be a good one.
