Welcome to RTB!!!
First off, lol means laughing out loud. Go to: Abbreviations and Acronyms to learn "the speech" hehehe
Second of all, sand for substrate, in my opinion, is bad for most snakes. Even Sand Boas do better in a substrate of bark, shavings or mulch, rather than sand. This is because sand has a tendency to get stuck between the scales and cause problems. I'm no expert myself, I'm sure the others will be along shortly and answer that better than I can. Howdy! Welcome to the site alway's nice to see new people comming to the site and sticking around! Well while we are on the subject of snake's (hehe!) what type of herp's do you keep? I also feel the same way as LdyDrgn on the sand as substrate as far as snake's go but i think it's great for other herp's!

I've been using the sand from day 1 as yet no probs.
I would like to know the symptoms of poss. problems
to know what to look out for.
So far I'm keeping 1.0 spotted python (A.maculosa)
1.0 centralian carpet (M.bredli)
both bought as juveniles. In australia its near impossible
to aquire overseas species.
You guys are pretty lucky like that!!!

I hate to ask this but, since you're from Australia, have you ever me the Croc Hunter guy????
I've always wanted to meet that guy. Anyways, as far as sand, I've never used it, but I"ve seen pet stores use it and snakes were having horrible sheds with it and it was getting inbetween some scales and probably causing irritation to the snakes. That's why I don't use it, I just thought it would be real irritating for them. I've never seen a snake on the beach so... Maybe side winders but I can't really think of to many boas or pythons. Welcome to RTB.net though. Man, I just realized in all that typing I didn't help you out at all......

No I've never met M.r. Erwin ,Captain , not sure I'd want to.
I guess he educates a few people but I'm not sure his info is
completely accurate. He's got good intentions & he's genuine
I can't bag the man for that.
P.S. I don't mind the odd rum myself.Cheers!!!

body is a temple, I agree, thats why I adorn mine! the majority of humans that have been on earth have been into body modification in one way or another. (I'm talkin' ancient tribes, primitives, even modern day tribes). during the last couple hundred years modern people have taken somthing away from society. our freedom to modify our bodies. yes, we're allwoed to, but try finding a normal job with facial piercings! not that I've had to find a different job, but I have friends and many customers that want these piercings, but society wont let them. it's really sad to me. why does someone care what someone else looks like? I've never understood. if someone can look at a picture on a wall, and not get offended by it, why can't they look at it on someone's skin???????????? my whole left leg is a sleeve tattoo of a kids movie by Tim Burton called Nightmare Before Christmas. kids love it!! kids see me in walmart and run up to me and look at it, then sometimes parents get retarded, and yell at their lids for liking my leg. they can see the movie, but it's wrong too look at it on my leg?!?!? WTF. ok, I'm done, this subject just hits really close to home -Juggalo

Welcome to RTB...Sand would be more suitable for desert species that are used to the way it heats up from the sun (or in your case a heat lamp ) and then cool down as soon as it's dark. It tends to reflect heat...not hold it and it either dries out so as not to hold any humidity or if you wet it down so that it will...it's too wet and subjects snakes to such lovelys as scale rot. It is too dense to allow heat to pass through from an under tank heat pad unless you have it very shallow in which case you are certain to have no control over humidity v/s overwetness...unless you have something pretty cool rigged up to take care of all that. Carpets tend to spend a good amount of time in the branches as juvies so your troubles really won't begin until they mature and fatten up enough to want to lay around on the floor all the time.
One more thing. if you are feeding in the cage....sand WILL cause impaction...please be sure and feed in a seperate container. It is also annoying for them to get it in the heat pits. There are other options without resorting to expensive petstore beddings. Check out the garden centers for cypress or eucalyptus mulch....wash it and bake it in the oven for 30-40 minutes at about 275 to kill any parasites that might be hiding. Both of those are dirt cheap here in the US....dunno about over there.
Now...my thoughts on the Croc Hunter. I think he sits on alot of knowledge for a very good reason. He has to kind of distribute out the scientific stuff a little at a time so as to not to alienate the non-herper audience and to keep his show interesting for all viewers. He is a little dramatic...but that is just entertainment. Alot of his audience is little old ladies and kids as well as people like us. Kinda hard to please everyone. But his antics are getting ratings .... in fact ...I think their stock doubles everytime he says "crikey"

I'm guessing you got the pumkin headed dude on your
leg ,Juggalo, nice choice!
I'm in the tropics down here so i don't think temp.or
humidity would be a problem, but I think impaction could be.
Eucalyptus chips are avail &cheap here I'll be making the change
asap. does it matter if they are treated?????Thanx Julius!
On to Steve Erwin, I realise there is a lot he knows and doesn't
say but he also lets slip with a few untruths only little ones .
"He is a little dramatic...." I think he is genuinely that passionate
about what he is doing.
By the way I still enjoy watching him every week!!!!!
