There are dozens of kinds. Chams can be tough, they are not beginner lizards. I think most people start off with a well started CB Veiled.

Chameleons are considered advanced species. Not meaning to sound offensive, but if you must ask such a broad and rudimentary question, then you are not ready for a Cham yet. I would suggest a maybe a Gecko, like a Leopard Gecko, or even a Bearded Dragon to get your feet wet with lizards and then work your way up to a Cham. Chameleons are very rewarding, but they die very easy without proper and very demanding care.

Do a google search on veiled chameleon care sheets. I'd try to list it all, but there is so much for me to try to tell you, I dont want to forget, or leave something out..
Good luck!

rosy boa did you just join the chameleonforum under the same id. i started out keeping bearded dragon and after a couple years breeding them i got my first baby veiled. they are just very hard to keep but once you start they get you and they become part of your daily routine. i started to down size my snake collection to increase my chameleon collection. every day i feed, water my chameleons and i have 9 right now. if you are truly interested in getting a chameleon do your research first

I dont think that was his point..
His point being, you need to do your research and read caresheets BEFORE you get your animals, or ask which one If you have to ask what kind of chameleon, snake, etc you should buy..you need to read more and make your choice...
A bit of experience with "easier" to keep animals would probably be advisable as well. Although it isnt necessary given you research your next pet.
Keeping chameleons isnt all that easy, you have to keep them warm & humid in a screen cage..lol Not to mention dietary needs, lighting specifications, etc.. The best thing to do is read or print out a caresheet, and make notes of items you will need before you shop for your chameleon, or ask which one you should get.

i think it would be a smart idea to get a bearded dragon if you do want to get a lizard. they are easy to keep and only reach about 20 inches
