for a first one, definitely a veiled chameleon. They are one of the easiest chams to care for, although chams in general have a lor of requirements. Veileds are smaller than most chams too. I'm not saying they are easy to care for, I'm saying they are easier to care for than, say, a panther cham.

No chameleons are really easy to take care of. They need a quiet, stress free environment, perfect temperatures, good quality food, proper lighting and humidity levels. That being said, I'm with Gecko-Guy, veileds are probably the most commonly available, most reasonably priced, and most tolerant of chameleons. Please make sure you pick up some books on them before buying one, they won't tolerate mistakes in their care for very long.

For a best first....it shouldn't be a chameleon. Chameleons are not the hardest thing to care for but have more requirments. They are not forgiving animals and even thought Vield's are the hardiest, they too have a lot for requirments. I'm not sure what you have expirence with but all chameleons take a lot of time and effort throughout all of its lifespan. Research a lot and make sure your ready and up to par before even considering obtaining a chameleon.

well, if u want interesting lizards; there are always geckos. Easier to take care of than chams and huge variety. Crested geckos are my personal favorite. If u want more info check out my caresheet in the lizard section.

we have thought about getting chameleons several times, but decided against it for many of the reasons listed above.

To answer that we need more than just "cool to have" and "nothng big". Are you looking for something you can handle a lot? Can you provide high humidity and/or temps? Are you willing to care for a species that could live 20-30 years? Are you looking for something colorful, or are you more concerned with temperment? Off the top of my head, cornsnakes, kingsnakes, some sand boas, and captive bred (that's important for any snake) ball pythons can be good first snakes.
