Well, on the east coast, you can buy 2 cubic foot bags at Lowe's or Home Depot for $2 a bag. However, since it's an eastern tree, it's much harder to find here. I use aspen mulch, which I got from a local mom-and-pop garden shop for $3 for a 2 cubic foot bag. But, since I scoop the mulch from a big pile, sometimes they don't care and charge me $1, or just let me take the bag for free. I don't know if it's available on the west coast, but you can always look at the local mom-and-pop garden shops. You could also look for Eucalyptus mulch. Cedar mulch is pretty much the most common mulch found in the west, but obviously, you can't use that. Just look around for the small garden shops that sell mulches, they'll usually have something.

Either way, the paper will do fine, just avoid colored sections, like sales flyers and the sunday comics.
As for humidity, paper doesn't hold it too well so extra misting, water bowl under a lamp or above a UTH, etc. is needed.
If you use one of the dial gauge hygrometers.. don't believe its' reading..
Get a good one, say a digital and use it.

Or redwood! The key here is to NOT use any mulch from an evergreen type of tree.
