Help So you don't use pine shavings?

Ok, I went to East Bay Vivarium today to look around (biggest reptile store in the nation) and they sell big bags of aspen shavings for $5 and I bought 2 bags of those 3 weeks ago. So I was talking to a worker there about it and it's PINE SHAVINGS and I thought it was Aspen. I told him that it was poisonous for snakes and he said its basically a myth. He said "We've been using Pine Shavings for our reptiles for the last 40 years with 0 problems at all. Maybe if the shavings were still wet with the oils then yeah, but our shavings are kiln dried." I'm still weary about this now that I found out it was Pine Shavings, but at the same time I don't know if I should believe it.

What do you think I should do? Should I change out all the bedding with Aspen or cypress multch? What bedding do you guys use? I don't want to use paper towels or newspaper because I read that snakes can feel insecure slithering on a slick surface.

Re: So you don't use pine shavings?

I would NOT trust pine bedding with reptiles. I don't care who uses it; the oils are bad bad bad bad bad.

I use newspaper on every one of my snakes and none of them feel insecure. You can shred the newspaper if you want - it's so cheap and easy to clean up, and aspen once you get it wet, molds and smells. Cypress can carry spores that can be deadly.

I use aspen!

I think it's pretty good. A lot of people who have multiple snakes use newspaper because it's cheaper and more cost efficient.

If you wind up getting aspen, go ahead and smell that and then smell the pine so you'll be able to tell the difference for next time!
((They smell different to me, at least. Lol. I have a good nose.))

Re: So you don't use pine shavings?

yeah, i still wounldnt chance it. i have heard that the pine shavings of old are not the same as the products today, and that the processing now removes all the oils, but why risk it if its virtually the same price as known-to-be-safe subs.

Coconut fiber is another good choice, but requires a little work to get fixed up.

She well knows that by enlisting under other banners than her own, were they even the banners of foreign independence, she would involve herself beyond the power of extrication in all the wars of interest and intrigue, of individual avarice, envy and ambition, which assume the colors and usurp the standards of freedom. – John Quincy Adams (1821)
