HAH ..Not like I'm cooking it on an open fire at all ya know We moved into modern times with one of those metal boxes with knobs to cook in/on. lol The stuff doesn't burn up when done at a 250 degree temp ya know lol. I've actually cooked much longer when trying to dry it out... ARGGGHH..just love it when they store it outside and it's been raining...
MAybe we'll try it on the bbq this summer though.... lmao

Just-Me, if you have a Wal-Mart down where you are, I'm pretty sure they have it. Down here the Aspen bedding is in the the fish department, where they keep reptile and other small animal stuff at. It's pretty cheap down here.

about that grey pulpy paper stuff... i use that for my rat because of the respiratory thingie and it's awesome, doesn't smell nearly as bad as anything else. but i used it for my snakey poo one time, and he got mites later that day (which i treated with the mineral oil and bleach method... incredibly effective )

The grey paper is called "Care Fresh" bedding, it's good, but I try to go for a more natural look so I use bark.
Welcome to RTB!
by the way, I used to use pine and liked it myself, but it really isn't that good... it's never to late to change it, I'd really go with Care Fresh or Bark.
Anybody here have an opinion on Lizard litter? (looks like grass chips or something...)

The Carefresh bedding is good for burrowing snakes.
John Hollister of www.herpo.com uses pine bedding. I emailed him last year about it. Just do not feed in the enclosure. He keeps some really expensive stuff. He has been using it for years and years.

nah, it didn't, and i'm sure of that part.
i just remembered that i read quite some time ago that pine shavings keep away things like mites and other little pests. is that true?

Your substrate doesn't have to come into contact with another animal with mites. The sub could be infested with it in the package from the pet store. Mites thrive in wood bedding. If you walk into a pet store with a reputation of having mites and you go home you could have an infestation of mites within a couple of days. I try to avoid pet stores now. When I go to pick up a couple of live mice I put them in a cage with treated bedding and wait a couple of days before feeding to my snakes.
I use Rid Lice control for bedding and furniture, it has the same ingredients as Provent a mite. I use it exactly the same as POM.

I bought some stuff that was called REPTI-BARK or something like that. On the back it said that it was Fir Bark. I know that pine bark is not good to use but is Fir Bark suitable enough for bedding?

yes, I've used reptibark in the past. it is very expensive, and should be throughly cleaned every month (besides daily spot cleaning), and not used more than a couple monthes. for a loose substrate, I don't think it's the most practical because it's so expensive, cypress mulch is different, but will work just the same, and cost $30 less. -Juggalo

Cypress mulch is non-toxic and harmless.
As for pine shavings, they can actually be safely used. It depends, of course, on how the pine was treated. Kiln dried pine shavings are safe to use as a substrate, as the levels of phenols and aromatic hydrocarbons are reduced to negligible levels.
