just like it sounds, it's tape that produces heat like a heating pad. Actually, I'm pretty sure it's a wire wrapped and sticky like tape.

Heat tape is an electrical conductor, generally sandwiched in Mylar, that is used to provide a thermal gradient in reptile enclosures. As voltage is applied to the conductor, it heats up.

Is it like a Cobra Heating pad. Does it stick on the outside of the tank. How much would it be for a 55gl tank.

Big Apple has heat tape by the foot as well as thermostat's, temp gauges etc. remember you only want to heat no more than 1/3 the total bottom area of the tank, so don't cover the whole thing. It should only cost you no more than $10 for all the Heat Tape you need. It does not "stick" like regular tape, but it does go on the outside of the tank. Make sure to leave enough room for the pad to vent when you put it on the bottom.

PS - its always better to put the actual question in the title of the post so that people know if they can help you with your question before having to click on the post... you will get more responses that way.
