Hey all:

A friend of mine had a book that he thought was really good (and actually my vet uses it too) that tells about herp health, anatomy and such. I think it even had topics on sea turtles (I used a few articles from it in my marine herps class in college, but I can't find them now).

Anybody know what the name of the book is and the author? My fiance needs some ideas for X-mas gifts for me, and I thought it would be a good one!

Thanks!

Yeah, they are what I would call the ultimate reference set for a vet that knows little about herps. There are 3 volumes.

"The biology, husbandry, and health care of reptiles" by Lowell Ackerman, DVM.

Volume I - The biology of reptiles
Volume II - The Husbandry of reptiles
Volume III - The Healthcare of reptiles

You can find them all at Amazon.com, sometimes even used. The reading is pretty heavy, but if you have a bio degree, it shouldn't be too bad.

Vols I & III are about $100 each and Vol II is about $50

Another decent book on my list is:
Reptile Medicine and Surgery by Douglas R. Mader, roughly $100

and another:
Herpetology: An Introductory Biology of Amphibians and Reptiles, Second Edition by George R. Zug, et al, about $70

Thanks a lot for the info J! I'm really going to need them now that I'm starting to breed my herps (my leo geckos just laid eggs today for the 1st time!!). I now plan on picking up a few books on them too.

Thanks again!!

If you can get all 3 for that price, GRAB'M!!! Just make sure that you ARE getting all three volumes, not just one or two.

Another good book that I have found is
Reptile Diseases by Rolf Hackbarth.
It has pics of lots of different species and photos of the illnesses in question so you can get an idea of what is happening to your reptile. It also has details on how they get diseases and even some of the major problems during breeding. One of the best thing about it though, is the chart in the back with dosages for Baytril and others based on weight and such. It is a good little tool, for rescuers and anyone that does their own medicating from home.
Hope this helps. Trina
