ReptiTemp 500R
Zoo Med ReptiTemp 500R
"Features include a 6 ft. remote sensor probe, dual port plug receptacle..." and so on. What's the probe for? Does the thermostat double as a thermometer? It doesn't say so, but I can't figure out what the probe is for.

Re: ReptiTemp 500R
The probe is so that the thermostat feature knows if it has reached the max temperature that you have set. It's basically what makes the thing work. This Thermostat works a little differently than the more expensive ones...it turns the heating element that you plug in on and off to control temperature rather than giving it a constant flow of electricity to meet the heating requirements that you set.
I actually ordered one a few days ago, havent gotten it in yet, but have done my reserach.
Actually, reptilesupply is exactly where I ordered it from. It was the best price that I could find when you add shipping costs.

Re: ReptiTemp 500R
Ooh. I see now. I've never used a thermostat before, so I'm clueless.
Thanks for helping out
I know! Reptile supply is great when it comes to prices. I tend to do price checks a lot and they're always less expensive.

Re: ReptiTemp 500R
I had one and it sucks!!!! It just died on me. you have to have temp gage where the probe is so that you can set it for the temp you want. On the thermostat there is no temperature gage.

Re: ReptiTemp 500R
Really? Well, I'm getting mine in a few weeks, so I'll see what happens when I get it. I've heard mixed reviews on it...some great, some bad...so I dunno. I have a heat gun (which was recommended) to keep track of temperatures.

Re: ReptiTemp 500R
I actually have a homemade racking system with flexwatt and the probe will go in the middle of the system (towards the back where the flexwatt will be), but not inside one of the tubs (way too troublesome). I will use the temp. gun to measure gradients. But if you want a more accurate measurement definitely put it into the habitat that you want to regulate.
Looking forward to the video! I'm curious to actually see it in action.

Re: ReptiTemp 500R
Great video. Sorry that the one you got broke! Hopefully mine wont when I get it in...I'm going to have to see what the return policy is...
It's just that I can't find anything that is actually affordable on my budget to regulate temps. Regular Thermostats cost around 100 dollars or more!
I'm crossing my fingers on this one.
