I just got a baby bci a few days ago and am having problems with the temps. I am getting 80 on the cool side and about 86-87 on the warm side. This is with a uth and a 75w red bulb. first can i leave the bulb on 24-7 to keep the temps ? second are the temps ok? I have read every where that mid 80's with basking aroung 90-92 is good. If i can keep the light on than i can get there but if it goes off the temps are droping on the cool side to around 70 and upper 70's on the warm.

Gibson,
Your temps sound like they are right.
The red light should be fine to leave on 24/7. I have been using the red light or the nocturnal black light on some of my snakes. As long as the lighting is specifically designed for a reptile and not one of those colored light bulbs you should be fine.

i'v been keeping an eye on my little girl. I figured that 79-80 on the cool side would be a little cold. Yet she always curls up in the corner of her tank on the cool side. I have hides on both the warm and the cold. ??? anyone know y she does this. Like I said before I am getting 79-80 on the cool side and 85-87 on th4e warm with a basking about 90. y is she spending almost all of her time on the cool end??

Hey Gibson, What are you measuring your temps with? Your boa's behaviour would suggest that the warm end may be a little warmer than you think. Besides, a UTH and a 75 watt light should be getting things HOT!

I have a different question. my tank has a cool side of 80 and the hot spot gets to 90. I have the hide in the cool side. However, today I made a mistake and put the wrong bulb on the hot spot spiking it up to 100!!!
To my surprise, my rtb left her hide and climbed up the stick to bask right under the hot spot, where it must have been a good 105-110! She turned a bit darker but seemed to be loving it. the cool spot was only 84 so she had plenty of room to get away.
Is it normal for rtb's to like temps so high? could I have caused her any damage?
I switched it back and the temps are back to normal... just wondering.

It isn't abnormal for them to bask in extreme heat for a short amount of time...sometimes they go for the quick thaw but will usually bolt for a cooler place to hang out as soon as they warm up. a basking spot on a high branch around 90 is ok...the hot spot on the ground shouldn't be over 87-88 though ....the problem with heating the basking spot to 100 is that it will likely overheat the whole cage. as long as they can get away from it though...they know when they are too hot and will move.
