I have a 40 gal. long and a 20 gal. which i house my rtb and my ball python in. I use mulch for their bedding. What is the proper way to clean the aquariums...hot water and soap? any ideas?

Hot water and a mild antibacterial dish soap should be fine, but you can used diluted bleach mixture as well, as long as your rinse it well, and dry it out before placing the animals back in the tanks.
I usually just hose them out, then use dish soap, rinse well, then let them dry.

Money saving safety tip!!!
If you have a UTH of any kind, cut it off and let the tank cool off before cleaning.
Sometimes cool water can make the hot glass shatter.

Eddie is right !!!!!!!!!!!!! I have made the mistake and had to run out and buy another tank. Than look out !, once i'm inside the pet store i am always looking for things to improve on. Larger tank, maybe new greens, or what ever else I think i need.

Another money saving tip... the CDC and other groups have recently stated that antibacterial soaps commonly sold (dish soaps, hand soaps, etal) are no better than your ordinairy run of the mill soaps. Its all in the quality of the cleaning that makes the difference.
If you're really serious about killing germs, use a mild bleach solution... or an industrial grade antiseptic, like chlorhexidine. I like chlorhexidine myself, kills nasty germs and doesn't give me a splitting headache like bleach does.
Something other people may be interested in - I have found chlorhexidine safe for use around birds as well as for use with amphibians.

Well I wasnt going to do this,
but if you want to be super clean, you can buy a animal grade disinfectant.
I use Rocal-d

while this is true, they've found that the no-water, alcohol-based hand cleaners like Purell do a superb job at killing germs and are trying to get hospitals to switch to those exclusively. that's what i use at home and since most of them have aloe or whatnot, they don't dry out your hands like washing fifty times with antibacterial soap will. plus, they're better!
