Re: Any Value in a Semiarboreal Cage...?
Female. I want big reptiles I miss my salvator everyday, she was huge. My signatures describe me to a T. In fact I hope one day to breed endangered Alligator snapping turtles and release them in the wild. I love the giant reptiles, even though I know how dangerous they are.

Re: Any Value in a Semiarboreal Cage...?
I am not too big on breeding reptiles. I find too many up for adoption and don't trust many keepers. I would end up having to house the offspring my self. That is why I want to breed a large native reptiles so I can release them and help the natural population.

Re: Any Value in a Semiarboreal Cage...?
Alright, we've decided on dimensions...4 ft. by 3 ft. by 3 ft. high. (Why those dimensions? It's a big as will fit in my Element) We're going to be putting in some shelves for additional space and some climbing opportunities, and we went out to Home Depot to price things out. We're going to use heat tape for Belly heat, and a plexiglass platform so it can go inside the tank.
I now have an additional question though. We were looking at various lighting sources, and it looked like the best lighting possibility in terms of cost and looks and carpentry demands was a set of three little halogen lights. Each one is about the size of a coaster, though about an inch thick with a 20 watt halogen light inside. It would appear I could just screw them into the ceiling and staple the wire to the ceiling and out the back, providing light throughout the cage that is low profile. Anyone used halogens before? Will a 20 watt bulb produce so much heat that I would need to cage it? Thanks for all the help so far.

Re: Any Value in a Semiarboreal Cage...?
We use energy efficient lights for lighting and CHE for heat. I don't know if heat tape will warm the whole cage so just remember this.
Do what ever it takes to get the heat and lighting done correctly. If your temp gun is showing too cool or too hot spots and your thermometers are not exactly right, re-do your heating methods.
A fore warning. CHE can get so hot they melt their own wires. We fixed this with a high temp lead wire then after the wire is away from the heat source we splice it with a normal plug.
You can see the wire connectors and heat wire on top of that cage.
