Yes they actually sale a safety cover for the lights. Its a cage that goes around it and you mount it inside around the bulb. You can find them at reptile stores or online.. Almost every online site that carries heat/lights will have them.

why not use standard 1/4 or 1/2 inch hardware cloth? it is bendable.

Big Apple Herp makes a bulb cage
Bulb Cage Protects Your Reptile From Your Bulb

It would be fairly easy to duplicate. We chose to use a wire basket that we bought from a discount store for about six bucks each. We just made sure that it wouldn't melt, and wouldn't get too hot due to its close proximity to the bulb. We used a bowtie type of nut to hold it on (the nut will swivel a half turn so we can remove the caging to change the bulb easily)

Here's a few pics of what we did

Be mindful of the fact that even though you have guarded against DIRECT burning, that mesh cage will STILL heat up....and COULD cause a burn. Why won't heating pads work on a wooden cage? thermostats are a great invention...use them everywhere!

Unfortunately, heating pads aren't an option for all types of cages....

If you want to use bedding other than newspaper in a wooden cage, a heating pad on the floor probably wouldn't be easy to do, because it would have to be inside the cage and under the bedding, which wouldn't heat the enclosure well. I have a wooden cage that I got along with a couple of my adopted snakes, and the only easy way to heat it without making a lot of modifications has been with an overhead CHE. However, this cage has holes cut for the lamp fixture and the fixture sits on hardware cloth, so the fixture is not IN the cage, just directs downward into it. Some people make false floors on their wooden cages and sandwich a heat pad or flexwatt underneath a thin layer of rigid plastic (like showerboard).

Possibly a safer option would be an overhead radiant heat panel, but those are far from cheap. Another option might be to use heat cable strung inside the ceiling of the cage, but not if you have an animal that is likely to try to hang or crawl through the cable.
