I currently use shoeboxes as hides , which my snakes really never go into in the first place. But anyways she defacated on the shoe box, how do I go about cleaning this??? Also is there something I can do to get her to use her hides, or are there any other types of hides that yall recommned for your snakes???? Any comments appreciated
thanks

Dont know if I said it in another post.... but welcome to red tail!
I would not use showbox lids UNLESS you replace them each time they are soiled. Carboard soaks up all the nasties and there is really no way to clean it out.
I use the "rock" hides that you can buy at he pet store and some of my snakes use them and some dont.... be thankful for the ones that dont... they are allowing you to view them rather than hide from sight.
Another option if you are on a budget is empty plastic butter or cool whip containers with a hole cut in it.
What kind of snake/snakes do you have?

Yeah I would ditch the shoe box idea Titums .
I reckon snakes prefer a regular hide with their
own odour in it which they then associate with comfort
and safety. You can't do this with cardboard wich you have to ditch
each time it gets some crap on it.

Why not use a rubbermaid plastic bin with a appropriate size hole cut into the side.
if it gets poo'ed on, you can rinse it off, and run it through the dishwasher.

kitty litter pans work good, they are little more expensive but they are good sizes and aren't transparent

Hi titums,
I use pop can cases for hides in my cages. This way my boas have a new one every week.

well i don't drink cokes Tom, or as northerners call them "pops", so the coke boxes don't work, but for the rubbermaids, do I just take the lid off and turn them upside down with a hole cut in , or do I leave the lid on ?????????

Upside down with a hole cut in the side sounds good to me!

Really, seriously he has to drink a lot of coke for all his boas. Anyways, can't believe noone stated the original half logs. These ain't to pricey, depeding on the size of your snakes. Like the others have said, rubbermaid containers, cardboard boxes, it can go on and on.

All these ideas are pretty good, but the coolest thing I ever used for a hide was an old acoustic guitar with the hardware removed. It looked good, but had its drawbacks too. There was no getting the snake out of it if she didnt want to come out, and if she ever pooed in it, I probably would have just had to toss it (which was what I was going to do when I got the idea to use it for a hide anyway)
The point is, be creative...almost anything can be a hide.

I'm a clay flower pot person, myself, they come in a wide range of sizes, and are fairly cheap until you get into the really mammoth ones. putting a hole in them without smashing the whole pot is a bit tricky until you get the hang of it...
