Anyone ever put glass on their cage door? How much did it cost for the precut glass? Im going to be trying to put some tempered glass doors on my cage that will be approxiamatley 5ft Long X 3ft+ or -. Expensive will it be?

tempered glass costs more...but i dont know what they charge for it all.

Tempered and Toughened glass is really strong and doesnt scratch as much as Plexiglass. Ive never used this site but it has alot of customer gage stuff on it and I will be using them for my next cages...Hope this helps : Custom Cages Online Catalog

Yep, definitely use tempered - because not only is it strong, it is much more tolerant to temperature extremes and if it should break, will break into cubelike pieces that aren't quite as dangerous as the dagger-like shards that are present when "normal" glass breaks.
Just ask what they'd charge you for pieces of the exact dimension you need - if the tolerances are tight, let them know you need it to be exactly sized when you're ready to buy. Prices vary depending on where you are (and how much competition the local shops have)...

How are you planning to use the plexi? Are you doing a hinged door or sliding doors? Just curious because plexi has a tendancy to warp and this can cause problems in sliding doors. I have 2 cages with hinged doors made of plexi and it seems to work fine in this application although it still has some warping. The thicker the plexi and the smaller the area you are working with the less you are going to have problems with warping.
I wouldn't recommend using sand as a substrate. If for no other reason than you will have problems holding humidity. It also seems like you could have a problem with it sticking to your snake. Just imagine after the snake comes out of it's water bowl and into the sand. What a muddy mess that will be.

As far as the original topic of this thread. Just call around to a couple of glass places in your area. Give them the diminsions and thickness of the glass you want and tell them you are looking for tempered glass and you probably want it polished on the sides.
I found when calling around that the prices varied alot among shops in the area. The place I went with charged me around $12.00 a sheet for 1/4" glass with polished edges that was 24"x11".
The polished edges will cost a little more but to me it looks nicer and helps make the doors slide smoother.
Just an FYI also, most glass places charge by the square foot so for example if you get a piece of glass that is say 35x15 you will be charged for a 36x24 piece.

someone else suggested the idea of getting a used aquarium and 'stealing' the glass from it by taking the aquarium apart. This works good if you have an aquarium with one cracked side. or buy one from a garage sale.
