Exo Terra Glass Terrariums
I was looking at getting the large 24"x18"x24" glass terrarium for my 4 ft jungle-striped coastal carpet python as the 15 gallon long aquarium is getting too short for feeding him.
I have spoken with a few dealers and they all said the terrarium is great for a snake but I wasn’t sure. If anyone has any suggestions or comments on these please let me know as I would like to find out from as many people as possible.
I am hoping this cage will last a few years before I have to build him something a bit more permanent.
Let me know what your thoughts are and any feed back would be appreciated!
Thanks,
-K0SS

You want something to last a few years then built something or be ready to dish out money. A carpet python will not last long in there, let alone yours that is already 4 feet. I don't know how it lasted in a 15 gallon enclosure to begin with.

I have to agree. If he's already 4', get something that will last him for life, as opposed to something that is only half of his body length.

They suck for holding humidity. i have a piece of plexi glass over the top of mine and still only get 70-75% humidy on average. Thats misting at least once a day.
Other than that I like mine.

I have no humidity problems with mine (I use for a crested) but this would be too small for your snake...

Hrmm, well that solves that problem about this tank but presents me with a new issue now. I assume the only way to solve this is to build a new tank from scratch or is there another solution?
I was under the impression that you did not need to have a tank that is as long as the snake as they rarely are stretched out completely. I was looking to get a cage that is taller as he tends to spend a lot of time climbing plus trying to feed him now is a fun problem as he can stay in one spot and reach any corner of the top.
Right now his tank is 30”x12”x12”. I would need to get/build something as long but taller correct?
Are there any good places to get a pre-built tank or should I do this myself to save? I am just a bit timid of building one myself as I am not sure it will turn out that well.
As for humidity, I live in Florida and his tank is almost always near the suggestion 70% with little misting. He has also always had perfect molts requiring no assistance, unlike my previous BP.
Again, I appreciate all your feed back and if there is anywhere I can go to do some more research on this subject let me know!
Thanks again,
-K0SS

I used an Exoterra for a juvenile GTP for a bit, but had to get a larger cage for her (she's now in a 20x20x20 BARRs cage - herpcages.com Your source for the best in herp cages) and I didn't have a problem with humidity either after I blocked off the screen top.
But you would need a larger cage. There are quite a few retailers that sell caging that isn't too expensive - check animalplastics.com, as well as visionproducts.us, boaphileplastics.com, and I'm sure there are quite a few others.
But you can make your own cage - if you just need a cage that doesn't necessarily look awesome, you can modify a plastic tote for use as a cage, but you probably wouldn't want to put it in your living room. The general rule for cage size is one square foot of floor space per foot of snake (so you would have to build one for the general maximum size that your snake might reach).
Also keep in mind that arboreal snakes do need some height for climbing, but don't go crazy, because they will start to stay at the top of a cage no matter how tall (so you wouldn't really NEED to build it taller than 2 feet tall or so), and the taller a cage is, the harder it is to heat.
